NY chicken lover!!!!

Are chicken mites a general issue in ny?
Just saw a thread and the thought of a mite problem scares the crap out of me... eek!

I don't think it's just NY, anyone who raises chickens has a chance of getting mites on their birds if the mites are attracted to the area the birds are houses in. I know they like dark damp areas and that's why it's important to make sure your coops stay dry. I also feel like the silkies are more prone to getting them than other breeds but that's just my experience. I've never had them on my other birds. Just make sure you supply an area for them dust bathe in and you should be fine.

I am sorry about the dog, but I do agree that dogs need to stay on their own property. Apparently they need to stay inside if you are in the South. I don't like dogs chained or tied, fenced is better, or the dog fencing...or trained! My neighbor had an old dog when they and we moved to this place. Their dog used to use my front yard every day. As I didn't maintain that area. Uh and it was old, I didn't worry. They got a new puppy after the other one passed. They walked down their driveway to get the paper with it each morning, and guess what, that dog thinks my yard it it's territory. Once in a while I find presents it leaves, but really not that often. But that dog will be on my property, which I now maintain, will be walking through my forsythia bushes and if I approach and tell it to go home, it growls at me! It has also growled at my husband. Other folks on the road will walk their dogs down the road on leashes and allow them to cross the area I mow to My bushes and pee on them. There are areas which are not maintained...wouldn't you think those would be the places that should be marked? I so want to invent a product that will follow a stream of liquid to its source and deliver a shock.

I hear what you say Rancher - but in my story the dog was in MY yard - secured by a chain to a giant tree ..... they shot because they disliked me. Southern cops would not do anything.

In the 15 years of my dog's life - she got away from me once. I figure these things can happen to good dog owners occasionally - and lethal force is a pretty extreme action. However, I agree with the principle you stated and that is why I don't have a LGD .... because for that to work - it has to be free to roam .... and my neighbors are too close and too .... odd .... for that.
Metella, so happy you are OUT of the South! That's terrible for you and your pet to go thru, poor dog.

I looked into LGD's too and it seems that they are a ton of work, hard to contain, and dangerous if they get out.

Most people in our area would try to find the owner of the stray dog. It sounds like the neighbor over there just doesn't like dogs at all.

We are residential in my current location, and can't shoot, other than a bb gun. If someone's shooting a gun in a residential location that may be something worth investigating.

A funny story, dad's sitting in his back room, elderly guy, and something comes thru the window. He starts to yell to mom that the neighbors are shooting at him. TG it was only a bb but in that neighborhood, we've seen police chasing suspects, throwing them to the ground, and cuffing right in front of the house; find shell casings in the driveway; watch the Friday night fights by the neighbors; and police cars are on the street several days each month. Dogs in the neighborhood are nearly all pitbulls and they're protecting more than livestock! LOL. Summers always interesting there, there's Rap music playing outside the front of the house, Polish music playing inside the house, and if you open the back door there's Spanish music playing. So whatever genre you want, you just open the door and dance! Haha!

JLAW NICE Photos! Bald Eagles? Wow! Great shot!

for myself - if a stray dog was harassing my animals on my property - I probably would shoot it.

If it was just running around, it gets a chance - and if I know the owners they get a lesson in what animals I have and how I have to protect them.

I did catch that part and I've no idea why they wouldn't like you. I do.

But actually - I took them a basket of goodies months earlier - those nuts were still fighting a war I was never in !!!

And I had liked the place a little - too hot - but the flowers were spectacular in the spring !

I agree with you all that it is my sisters responsibility to look after her pets... Dogs do get loose. I just wish this man would have picked up the phone and called the animal control officer we pay for and had him take care of it. It was the man's neighbor... (a veterinarian) who called animal control to let them know he was shooting at a dog. She ( the vet) said the dog was doing nothing but running threw the field barking! the man will not let us check his property to find him hopefully alive.

Pharm - I just got my first egg from your Silkie hen! I'm setting it aside for the incu because I've seen my sizzle cockerel mating with her. If it's fertile I could have MY first generation sizzle chicks!
