NY chicken lover!!!!

Are chicken mites a general issue in ny?
Just saw a thread and the thought of a mite problem scares the crap out of me... eek!

They are everywhere. Put a container out with wood ash & some peat moss for the chickens to dust bath in. As long as mine have that I don't have a mite problem. I put more ash in every week or so. The month I forgot last year they all got mites. Never again will I be lax about it.

Maybe you know already, but in case you don't, this is a male Io moth -- they're so cool! I see them once in a while at my cottage in Canada. Nice shot!

Another terrific photo! This is a Red-spotted Newt. How cool. This is a youngster, kind of a teenager, and can take up to 3 yrs. to mature and will then return to water to live. Meanwhile, they like living in the woods / moist leaf litter.

You saw some neat stuff. Love the pics and thx for sharing them with us. I'm a nature nerd, so I dig this stuff!

I'm so mad!!! I want opinions.... Who would shoot a dog for being on your property?? Not doing anything wrong.... but barking? A man shot my sisters dog for barking !! He wasn't harming any animals or people !! He is a bloodhound. Now he is missing (pray that we find him alive). This man also sets traps my neighbors dog lost a leg. And countless other dogs in our area are missing!! All the town can say is " well there is a leash law "!! Omg so mad

Lot of people - SADLY - will do this.

They are hold over from days when all animals were thought to have no feelings, no worth ... and some people do it because they don't like the owners.

I had a dog that was out on a chain for the morning - someone drove by and shot her because I was a northerner in the precious South ! Totally true ...

fortunately she was not killed, but had a bb in her forehead for the next 10 years ! Shooting a trapped animal on the owners property - so they surely feel justified to shot anything trespassing on their property. Nasty buggers must not have many friends. :(

This makes my blood boil. We have someone on our road that shot and killed the most beautiful, sweet golden retriever. She was a wanderer but did not hurt other animals. Her companion dog, another gorgeous springer spaniel, was also shot. He survived, but had over 200 buck shot pellets in him. I am annoyed at the owner for letting them wander, but I'm really disgusted at anyone who would shoot dogs that were out for a joy run around, happy-go-lucky and loving everyone they met.

Another neighbor's cat had tons of buckshot in it -- only found after the owner couldn't figure out why her young cat was walking stiffly like an elderly animal would. The vet said the buckshot was accumulated over time. What a sicko.

My two cents.

I'm very sorry about your sister's dog, kimmerjo, and hope she can find it safe and alive.

QUESTION ON THE BROODIES!!!!!!!!!

On average, how long does the broody behavior last? Just wondering, as it's a pain....haha!

Thanks, folks!

The sitting part or the raising chicks part? Some broodies will quit after three weeks when they don't hatch any eggs. Others will just sit and sit and sit...I had a silkie go three months once until I gave her eggs. My duck that kicked out the babies is still sitting. It's been at least six weeks now for her.

Until they decide they aren't going to have babies. Months. Weeks. Days. Depends on the bird. They will break in 21 days if you let them hatch a chick. And don't worry about "lone chick" if a broody hatches it...cuz it has a whole flock of birds to be social with, so it isn't a lone chick
