NY chicken lover!!!!

Yikes, the south sounds bad for us northerners. My cousin and his wife lived in Tennessee for a while, and they seemed to like it a lot. They were from NJ...

On the hatching, the three broodies each ate at least one egg yesterday. Maybe someone dared them? And everyone else shared an egg that slipped out of my hands, with all these egg eaters, I wonder if I shouldn't send a lot of them off to return in shrink wrap, and start again with some sweet innocents next year.

I shouldn't have been so broad in my statement about the south. There are parts that are nice, we have family in VA and TN, they all do wel and seem to like it. But they are also in the city or suburbs.
The south just is not for me.

I would say if you move south and are near a bigger and metropolitan city - you would be ok - but I was in a rural area of a small town (cause I love the country) and dispite my efforts and keep to myself most of time ways - I felt the hatred just because of where they "thought" I came from ... see, technically I am a California girl. ha ha on them.

Hi! My family lives up in northren new york. We are raising a bunch of chickens, turkeys, ducks, pheasant, and guineas along with our goats and some other pets.

So question for us new yorkers:

Does anyone raise dorkings in upstate new york?

I had recently acquired three red dorking hens after a fox had killed the lady's rooster and the eggs we were going to get instead. I would love to get a man for these guys or a couple of straight run chicks to raise up for them. Would prefer reds but I'll take whatever 'dork' (lol love their adhd) I can find. :)

Pharm so sorry to hear of the Silkie hatch trouble. Do you think they are harder to hatch than other eggs? Of the single hatch we did, only 1 of 4 silkie eggs hatched. The sizzles hatched out 2 and the other 2 progressed pretty far.

Since our single black Silkie moved from the lower part to the upper part of the coop we now hand feed her because she doesn't come down for food or water. We moved water up there for her too.

It seems like if someone marries a Southerner then they can acclimate into the lifestyle down there.

We're retiring to NY! If we get a hankerin' for the South we can crack open a packet of instant grits and make a couple of fried eggs. Without ever having to leave NY!

I lived in VA for two years and LOVED it!! We were very welcomed, had lots of friends. The only time we ever had any issues is when people asked where we were from because we had a accent.. lol.. They automatically thought we were from NYC so we always had to explain that there are other parts of NY.
We moved back because my first child was born there and whenever we went home to visit she would freak out around her grandparents/relatives. She needed to know them.
4 kids later. Long NY winters. I would move back in a heartbeat!! lol

No ...but I am going to ...but I love the non toxic ingredients ! Hate Round-up , Etc
Sally did said it works

and it gets 1 on 1 attention from Mama..definitely NOT alone ....
Your

She growls but she doesnt peck...you can move her eggs or pet her .
Do you see your hens turn their eggs ? I havent seen either of these do this TT my Sumatra - Ive seen her turn her eggs

Fragile chicks ? Do you have a Rooster now ?
Gotta have a Papa to have a baby ....LOL

Hi Gramma,

No, I do not have nor want a rooster. I do realize I need one to have fertile eggs, haha. I know some people don't, which is amusing!!

My Columbian Rock (the larger of the two) is the broody one now. Her name is Ursa. She is a very good bird in that she'll allow me to reach under her and take her egg (and those of any other hens she's setting on). She'll puff up a little, but is submissive. I then place her back onto the coop floor, and at this point she usually sings her "egg song" and then chooses to walk out the pop door to join the others outside. My neighbor was caring for my birds for a couple of days while I was away, and her daughter saw Ursa move an egg beneath her. Some times I will find one pushed out on the floor. Not sure why or if it's her that is doing it.....

The "fragile" bird is not a chick. She is my 1-yr old Brabanter, Gertie, that I got last spring. You may recall that she is the constant target of a few of the birds, especially the Delaware, who just seems to find bashing on her a great past time. The Brabanter (Gertie) already has partial blindness in one eye from getting pecked hard and has lost many of her head and neck feathers after repeated attempts to integrate her and following everyone's suggestions. It's not going to work. I've spoken to Marquisella about this, and she agrees that if I continue to mix her, she will be killed.

Meanwhile, I have her in a large dog kennel within the coop. My Lavender Orp roosts with her, and when I put them outside in the mini pen, she is her buddy. But I also make sure that the Orp spends time with the larger flock, so she continues to be accepted. This works well for my birds, but is a huge pain to me to be constantly switching and trying to keep them apart. I also lose coop space for my bigger flock (because of the kennel cage).

I am considering rehoming Gertie to someone who wants a "pet" and does not have a rooster....maybe someone with bantams or a small breed bird. She's a great layer and very sweet and easy to handle. I don't want to see her get worn down by stress. Her little mohawk is finally growing back!

Anyway, that's the story!!

Lots going on over here. Marans eggs locked down today and tomorrow turkeys and ducks, although I have my doubts the ducks will hatch. The air cells are too small as they too were in the LG. We'll see how they do. I also plan to start the coop for my cemanis this weekend so that will be fun. And some pictures of some of my babies!

And I found this guy hanging out on my door today:

Pyxis -

Oh so cute chickies!!!!! I love seeing the Lav Orp chick, because when I got mine, she was about a month old and I never got to see what she looked like as a tiny chick. Now I know! She is the family favorite here, just for being all-around sweet and a great layer.

Your moth is a Rosy Maple moth and is very neat looking. They remind me of swirled sherbet! (The yellow fuzz almost looks like one of your chicks!)

I was in a very small country town to. I was about an hour south of Jackson and about 20 minutes north of Natchez...i think lol. I have family in Virginia Beach and visited there once on a band trip. I loved it there. Bu yes the country towns are a little worse than city. I just moved back to VT from Newark and cant imagine ever living in NJ again. Or any city for that matter. I like the country setting too much.

TOB - sorry to hear about your poor Gertie. I was wondering how things were going with that bird. Sounds like you'd probably be better off finding her a home with chickens who will be more accepting of her. :-( I had to do that with a frizzle I got from ke5hde. I brought one of his here and she just constantly ducked and dodged everyone around her. I ended up bringing her back to Chris cuz I was afraid she would end up being so high strung that she wouldn't last. I wouldn't have had the space (or the energy) to keep her separated from everyone and on her own and let her out by herself everyday. I hope you can figure something out. Like you said, maybe someone with bantams would be able to give her a nice home. :)
