Gotta have a Papa to have a baby ....LOL
Hi Gramma,
No, I do not have nor want a rooster. I do realize I need one to have fertile eggs, haha. I know some people don't, which is amusing!!
My Columbian Rock (the larger of the two) is the broody one now. Her name is Ursa. She is a very good bird in that she'll allow me to reach under her and take her egg (and those of any other hens she's setting on). She'll puff up a little, but is submissive. I then place her back onto the coop floor, and at this point she usually sings her "egg song" and then chooses to walk out the pop door to join the others outside. My neighbor was caring for my birds for a couple of days while I was away, and her daughter saw Ursa move an egg beneath her. Some times I will find one pushed out on the floor. Not sure why or if it's her that is doing it.....
The "fragile" bird is not a chick. She is my 1-yr old Brabanter, Gertie, that I got last spring. You may recall that she is the constant target of a few of the birds, especially the Delaware, who just seems to find bashing on her a great past time. The Brabanter (Gertie) already has partial blindness in one eye from getting pecked hard and has lost many of her head and neck feathers after repeated attempts to integrate her and following everyone's suggestions. It's not going to work. I've spoken to Marquisella about this, and she agrees that if I continue to mix her, she will be killed.
Meanwhile, I have her in a large dog kennel within the coop. My Lavender Orp roosts with her, and when I put them outside in the mini pen, she is her buddy. But I also make sure that the Orp spends time with the larger flock, so she continues to be accepted. This works well for my birds, but is a huge pain to me to be constantly switching and trying to keep them apart. I also lose coop space for my bigger flock (because of the kennel cage).
I am considering rehoming Gertie to someone who wants a "pet" and does not have a rooster....maybe someone with bantams or a small breed bird. She's a great layer and very sweet and easy to handle. I don't want to see her get worn down by stress. Her little mohawk is finally growing back!
Anyway, that's the story!!
