NY chicken lover!!!!

Quote: ( I already have one weak link in the chain (my picked-on Brabanter) and I don't want any fragile chicks. <--- )
You were talking about broodys laying on eggs = chicks with a Rooster ..LOL so in the context ? see why I wondered ?
Your moth is a Rosy Maple moth and is very neat looking. They remind me of swirled sherbet! (The yellow fuzz almost looks like one of your chicks!)

Reminds me of Yoda Beautiful I have never seen one ...

pharm, Sorry on your latest hatch. How well I know about this. We now have
7 eggs in our tiny Brinesa. 6 seem to be ok....one not fertile. Expect hatch
Monday. Regards, Aria

Chicks are hatched and dry. They are so cute.

Rosita's eggs are due to hatch early next week. Can't wait.

My black frizzle Jessie has decided that she wants to be a broodie and a nasty one at that. She just about took my finger off when I tried to get the eggs this morning. I'm going to start collecting some of my silkie eggs and let her try to hatch out a few. My black frizzle roo has not left her side for 2 days. It seems like when ever I look over that way while we are out, he is on her. I figured that I'd try to get a few of them and then crack one to make sure that it is fertile. I'm hoping to give her 3 or 4 so maybe I'll get one or two.

Omg i want!!! They are so darn adorable!

I was in a very small country town to. I was about an hour south of Jackson and about 20 minutes north of Natchez...i think lol. I have family in Virginia Beach and visited there once on a band trip. I loved it there. Bu yes the country towns are a little worse than city. I just moved back to VT from Newark and cant imagine ever living in NJ again. Or any city for that matter. I like the country setting too much.

I grew up in E. Brunswick, NJ and wouldn't go back for anything! I had a great childhood growing up, and we had a larger-than-average backyard.....BUT.....I love the country life and could never go back to the 'burbs! Newark is a tough city. You made a good move to leave!

TOB - sorry to hear about your poor Gertie. I was wondering how things were going with that bird. Sounds like you'd probably be better off finding her a home with chickens who will be more accepting of her. :-( I had to do that with a frizzle I got from ke5hde. I brought one of his here and she just constantly ducked and dodged everyone around her. I ended up bringing her back to Chris cuz I was afraid she would end up being so high strung that she wouldn't last. I wouldn't have had the space (or the energy) to keep her separated from everyone and on her own and let her out by herself everyday. I hope you can figure something out. Like you said, maybe someone with bantams would be able to give her a nice home. :)

Thanks, Lynzi, for your support and empathy. Sorry you had to return your frizzle, but you did the right thing and ke5hde is a "good egg!" It's a tough situation here, that has been making things more complicated than they should be. Last year I wasn't willing to give her up, but I am now -- she deserves to have more room and outside time than she gets now. I just want to know she's going to a place where she won't have to deal with a rooster or other larger, aggressive hens like mine. I guess it was my fault initially for choosing a Brabanter to put in with my larger breed birds. She is just so different, both in stature and in her speckled plumage, and it set her up as the whipping boy, so to speak. Keep her in mind if you know of a potential kind person that might be a good fit for her. Thanks!

(Gertie).................. ( or some one with silkies ?) Maybe Chris would take her ?

I was thinking silkies or bantam breeds would be potential good flock-mates for Gertrude... But I do think she deserves a secure spot without the added stress of a rooster. I don't know if there is a perfect home out there for her that I am dreaming of. Perhaps not realistic to expect this....

Well I just grabbed the lone duck egg out of the duck hut that my black runner is sitting on. It's cracked.

I brought it in to candle it and try to figure out how many more days it has so I know when to move her when it hatches. Problem is, I have no where to move her. Well no where that will give her access to the pond or that is tall enough to allow her to stand up. I do have a run but it's only half covered. Anyway...the duckling inside is still alive and probably due to hatch any day now. So I put it in my incubator that is currently empty. When it hatches I will put it back under her with hopes she'll take it and raise it. Again, problem is, if I let her free range with it in the yard, the others will probably go after it. OR it will get stuck in the pond and won't be able to get out as easily as the adults can. I better go set something up with that run. I really want her to raise this duckling on her own without my help.

So I have hatched and hatched away this year. I've lost 3 dozen eggs in the incubator because somebody played with dial and set it down to approximately 70 degrees. I also gave 2 dozen eggs to a 2nd grade school class to hatch but they through them out on day 22 after 5 chicks hatched. I was happy they had some chicks hatch but confused as to why they through out the remaining ones. So then I have hatched 32 chicks and gave 11 to my uncle. Now, those I kept, every single one, is a cockerel!!!! I'm hanging on to them so I know I'm not getting rid of any I should keep and later regret. So, I have 12 more bantam eggs hatching under a hen and 8 LF eggs hatching under another hen. I still have one on my Lemon Blue hens gone broody and waiting for eggs to set under her. I'm waiting for the Buff Barred hens from Featherz to start laying fertile eggs so I can hatch them. Anyhow, here are some pics of my brooder full of cockerels and my frizzle hens new 5 chicks-

Rugar- hatching LF Lemon Blue eggs

Yuba- hatching Mille Fleur and Mille Fleur Frizzle eggs

Peppermint and her 5 chicks. 3 frizzles, 1 Mille Fleur, and 1 Lemon Blue

Feather- one of my better cockerels

Nigal

Mf cockerel who is missing outer toe nails

Ranger- probly my best cockerel so far

Nigal and his brother with missing toenails
