Found one of my young hens yesterday inside the pen dead. Feathers were everywhere. From her "waist" up her feathers were gone. She wasn't eaten or torn up. Two punctures on her breast. We found no tracks but there is a lot of dried grass in that area. She was left inside the pen and the fence...
New pics of the crew. My black chickens are so gorgeous! Loving the mix. Also love my big white rooster (he's in the bottom left pic). Believe he came from the red hen's egg. His build is so much different than the others. Lol
The rooster in the pic with Gretel is golden with green...
Lost our dog three days ago. I let him out to use the bathroom and he got hit. I feel horrible. Still cry when I think about him. He was our shadow and such a good dog. One of those dogs that will stand out when you look back at the great pets you've had in your life.
Anyway... I just wanted...
I was shocked at the smell when we scalded it. I read, after the fact of course, that a little dish liquid soap in the scalding water will help with that. Lol
We processed our first chicken today. Watched some videos on YouTube, which were very helpful. My fiance is a hunter so he is familiar with the dressing out of animals. Really wasnt as long a process as I thought it would be. We cut his throat. Tried to be as humane as possible. We have it...
We moved the chicks outside to their new digs. In case you wonder, it's a catfish cage! But we put it inside the dog pen that makes up our chicken commune. Haha
Love my chicky babies. They are getting so big. I am hoping they will be on the larger side and take after my BR. Oh and I'm not...
I just got this shot. Gretel with her teenagers. They always take a break from the woods to come get crumbles! Haha
Gretel is looking rough with her molting!
Gretel jr (maybe 'Willow'?) Been trying to get them all used to being held.
We live in south Alabama so it doesn't get too bad. We add extra shavings to the coop, block wind with thick tarps, and put a heat lamp in with the girls on very cold nights.
Aww they're so cute!! Do you hatch them out in an incubator? I bought mine mealworms and they like them a LOT. But lately they seem skittish. Except for two, gretel jr and pepper, they like to have their chests rubbed. Wonder what else I need to do. Take them out and play with them? Hmmm
Our quiant little rustic coop. :)
I love the bitties but I'm ready for them to graduate to outdoor quarters. They're messy messy lol
Am trying to teach the babies the "here chicky chicky" when I give them meal worms.
Thank you so much! I guess it might make a cute children's book. Hehe
@Fancychook- awesome! How do you train them to come when you call them? King Henry is a very handsome fellow!
