They actually come to winter in west Texas - Monahans. We get an occasional heron by the lake and cattle egret but we are 90 miles too the coast so only see birds that are passing through.
Have a handfull of pine siskin today. The cold weather has sent them south finally. Did a refill of all the feeders and set out the finch blend in one. Unfortunately along with the siskin the hawks follow. Have a horned owl and a barn owl doing the night shift. Does make free range in the...
We went on vacation to Playa Del Carmen MX and only brought the iPhones for photos... so missed really great pictures of some cool shorebirds and orioles. There were moorhens that spent the day chasing the coots back across the mangrove and cormorants and a flock of really loud parrots.
The Heron is handsome! We have cattle egret and an occasional blue heron. We are in-between the migration time now. It is a good time to be close to the coast to see the great flocks of geese and pelicans heading to their winter places. They had a monarch butterfly tagging event last weekend...
Wow! Teila you have some cool colored birds! The woodland birds we have pretty much blend in with - well... the woodlands. Except the always present male cardinals of which I believe the female have left for their Mexico vacations with the sensible migratory birds.
the finches do better if you run the larger seed or whole sunflower hearts up thru food processor. They will toss anything big to the ground too get to the correct size seed for their liking.
Bird Wars today. The ruby throated hummers are engaged in aerial warfare. The western bluebirds have launched a full attach on the reflective windows and side mirrors of the F150 pickup and a bluejay was full on attacking the coopers hawk nest where the hawks have successfully hatched a chick.
New bird showed up today - a male red headed woodpecker. He is coming to the wire peanut feeder. I had been putting suet pellets in them but they were getting all gross and moldy and I put plain peanuts in and the woodpeckers are much happier.
The pine siskin are still here. Had a flock of robins in the yard...finally. Have been optimistic given our warm temperatures that we were done with winter. A bluebird family has moved in to the bluebird house. I washed all of the hummingbird feeders and put them out in anticipation of the...
I would love to send the finches and pine siskin back your way Ralph. I figured out that they like the finch blend feed because it is in small pieces and anything bigger they toss out to the ground. Had filled a feeder with sunflower hearts figuring they would like them- well yes but.... and I...
The BlueJays are fairly well behaved and share the feeders with the Cardinals and Woodpeckers. The Cardinals are the worst behaved of the bunch. Still hummingbird aerial war going on before the migration further south
The hummingbird migration is on! I put out additional feeders - now up to 7 for the hummers and they are zooming around everywhere. Now seeing ruby throated defending the feeders. I think they hang around for 3 weeks before moving on south. Pretty fun as they will pay no attention to humans as...
The hummers are here in number. One of my neighbors posted a picture of a dozen all perched around her feeders. Looks like she has Ruby Throated in her yard. I have a half dozen territorial little Roufous hummers
