I'm in a suburban area of NY with lots of woods/forests around. I was free ranging my chickens this afternoon and found one of them dead. I've had one chicken killed by foxes before (all we had for evidence was a bunch of feathers outside the coop) but this one wasn't carried off or eaten...
Thank you for your advice. They free range pretty often now, but the featherless spot seems to have spread. Also, one of my other chickens has had the same thing show up on her. I'm starting to worry about diseases or parasites, but I still can't figure out what it is. Their cuts are closed...
Yesterday, I noticed that my Araucana was missing feathers on her back, towards her tail, and also that she was wounded and bleeding. The wounds look like pecking wounds, and I have noticed her being skittish around some of the other hens, as well as the others going after her a few times...
I just noticed that my columbian rock cross is losingfeathers around her neck. It's been getting extremely cold, hitting the negatives several times in the past week, and I'm worried about her getting cold. I also don't know why she's losing feathers; all the others seem fine, and it can't be...
Ok, thank you. I'm not so worried now.
I have noticed a lot of feathers, now that I look for them, but I'm not sure they're all hers. She is not sitting on the nest most of the time. In fact, I haven't seen her sitting on the nest at all the past 4 days.
My chickens are 25 weeks old (almost 6 months), and have been laying for about 2 months. About 4 days ago, we realized that one of my chickens (the Araucana) did not lay. She hasn't laid for 4 days now, and I'm worried something might be wrong.
Could she be molting? I thought they couldn't...
I had to repost this... accidentally deleted it. Oops.
I have 5 chickens: RIR, Araucana, Columbian Rock Cross, Golden Comet, and Silver Laced Wyandotte.
My camera: Olympus OM-D E-M5 with a 75 mm lens.
Thanks everyone! I put the eggs in the fridge, as well as the 2 other eggs I got the following days. I hope to get another today (I saw her sitting on the nest, but I don't think she has laid yet) :)
Hi. My 4 month old (exactly) chicken just laid her first egg, and I don't really know what to do with it. I've read that chicken eggs, if they aren't washed, don't have to be refrigerated. I'm wondering what's the best choice as to preserving the eggs/keeping them until they are eaten.
Do...
Thanks! If I do decide to trim the beak, does anyone know how to do it? Should I trim both the top and the bottom, to keep them even, or just the split top? What should I use to trim it? How much should I trim? Is the split too long to be able to trim in one go?
Sorry for all the...
I have an 11 week old barred rock who is supposed to be a pullet, but I'm not so sure. Can anyone help out?

Also, how accurately can you tell his/her gender just from this picture? If you need any more angles, please let me know! Or is there a way of telling that can't be found from...
One of my 11 week old chickens has a little bit of a beak problem. The beak is "split" at the end, so instead of coming to a point, it forks off into 2 ends. I don't know if this is a problem, or what do do about it. Please help!
P.S. she had a flat-ended beak as a chick... did that somehow...
