This is one of the young cockerels,
Really happy with the copper color. Had 6 and all had very nice Copper, no more yellow halo around the neck. You can see some other cockerels in the background,
I did not keep this one. I prefer my roos to have copper spotting on the chest and he did not.

So I have been busy working with quail this year. I only did one hatch with my FBCM have 5 Pullets and 5 cockerels. Here is a photo of one Pullet all the same bird. A cockerel can be seen in the background of one photo. I even forgot how old they are 🤦♂️ roughly 12-16weeks. Very happy to have 5...
@Minky please someone correct me if I am wrong. It’s my understanding that while you will lose birds to mareks the ones that do survive and following generations will become immune to it. You are actually breeding resistance into your flock.
I am not sure, now that I look at the photos I see what you mean. I could not get her to stop moving when trying to take photos. I’ll have to take a closer.
One of my newer hens. I really like her, they finally getting chunky :wee. Now chooks man going to tell me no good:th:lol:
That is my only Roo in the background hope all goes well this winter.
That’s funny I take the completely different approach, I don’t handle my roos at all. I give them their space and they give me mine. Have not had an issue doing it this way. I will say of all the Marans cockerels and roos I have hatched I have not had any aggression issues towards me.
Difficult year with trying to hatch a replacement rooster. I had a couple prospects but sold those earlier in the year knowing I would have more to select from. Well here we are at the beginning of winter and I am down to the original Roo all by himself. I like to have atleast 2 at all time...
It is very fun now concentrating on one breed and working with them. Now I completely understand why it’s not as satisfying buying the perfect bird but much more rewarding working with your own birds seeing the growth and changes
I have I think 15 cockerels and I don’t like any right now.:th
I have this one that I am watching from the hatch but I am not excited for some reason
that is his sibling Pullet and you can see the Pullets size is nearly the same I am very excited the Pullets are getting bigger.
In my experience you are better off not making pets of your cockerels. The more you play with the now I think the worse they will be later. They will see you as part of the flock and try to control you because that is the job of a rooster. Keep your distance and pet your hens not the rooster. I...
