Hey everyone!!! :) Been awhile since I've logged on. I've been thinking about you all and wanted to say hi.
I've still got Barbs and Bieles. Been thinking of starting a new breed. Pam these Barbs are still crazy as all get out but the hens are such great layers. They layed all through the...
Did you eat the barbs? What did you think of the meat? How well do the Niederrheiners lay? It may be my next breed to check out. My problem is when the birds are too sweet they're more like pets and I have a hard time killing/processing them. :)
Hey Pam been thinking of you lately and thought of PMing just to say hi. Hope you are doing well and that goes for everyone else on the thread. Wow it really died out for awhile.
I still have my Bieles and Barbs. The Bieles are such great birds. The Barbs on the other hand are a pain cause...
Hey Camping. Just want to say congratulations to your success. You've put a lot of time and hard work in your endeavor and it is paying off. I'm glad to have been a witness to you sharing your triumphs. Cody.
She makes the broody grunt/ growl and flares out her feathers to me. She's definitely acts p-i-s-s-e-d off. Lol! (The forum censors the word that's hyphenated) :)
Yea. It was their first time to go broody and hatch chicks. The broody girl that turned mean even pecks at me know. When I get close to her (she's off the nest now) she makes the broody sounds and will peck at my feet.
Hey CampingS. :) Hope you and your family have been doing well this summer.
Yea. I didn't know it was so touch and go with broodies. Chicken life is brutal!
I know now that if I want to be sure chicks have a good chance to make it I better hatch them and raise them in a brooder. Lol!
Well A few weeks ago a let my broodies set their eggs. Let me tell you I've learned a lot watching these crazy birds. The two Bielefelder girls one has turned mean and I think she killed the others single chick. I found no trace of it this morning. I figured she or the rest of the flock ate it...
Hey everyone. :) Wow! This thread sure has been quiet lately. Everyone must me busy doing Summer activities. Hope that's the case and all is well with the group.
I've got broody girls piled in the nest boxes, Barbezieux and Bielefelders. Guess they told the others to stop laying and to act...
One of my Barb pullets has gone broody. I'm going to let her go and see how she does with the clutch she's sitting
StephWind, are you seeing any action in your eggs yet?
^ Yea, that's what I've started thinking also but didn't want to say anything just yet. The aggressiveness combined with the extreme flightiness takes the pleasure out of keeping chickens. When I culled last week I had to go in the coop at night to pull some of them off the roosts and put them...
Steph are any or your males showing aggressiveness towards humans yet. I have a couple, one being my best looking male that try to spur me. They don't have fully formed spurs yet but when they do they'll get me good. I've already been scratched a couple times. It's a behavior I just can't put up...
That's great Steph can't wait to see how your hatch goes.
I finally butchered 9 of the 14 cockerels I had. I left 5 for breeding picks.

Yea it was a bit over-cooked. I've never used a roasting bag. Next time I'll roast in a magnalite roaster with the lid on and take it off the last 30 mins. to crisp up the skin.
Update on the Barbezieux dinner. These birds have the darkest meat I've seen on a chicken before. Compared to RiR, BR, and Bielefelder it is the darkest. Has a very strong flavor to it. I can see how some may not like it if they don't like dark meat cuts. I seasoned the carcass well with...
