The Making of the
"Poo Drop' Inn"
Planning
I have never owned chickens before so this is my first attempt at making a coop. I did a ton of research before I started. Most of it on BYC. This is an amazing resource.
There were a few important criteria I had to deal with before I got...
Home of the
Poo Drop' Inn and Weed Patch
Welcome to my page!
This is my first foray into keeping chickens. I have wanted to do this for long time and am very excited about having my own backyard flock. My primary interest is for eggs and the enjoyment the flock will bring.
I decided on a...
Chicks residing at the
Poo Drop' Inn
They're here!
The order arrived from McMurray on 11/10/10. I ordered seven RIR pullets and one RIR roo, 2 EE pullets and fifteen BR pullets, of which I only plan on keeping three. Needed a minimum order of 25 and since I knew I would not be able to...

Adding the exterior sheeting
I had a lot of reservations about using this new siding. It's call "Smartside" and you can find it in Home Depot and Lowes. The stuff is pretty thin. I had previously used T1-11 and is much thicker than this stuff. However...
Construction
I started this building process in mid September 2010. I vowed not to order chicks until the coop was completed. I really did not want to have the chicks in the house and I know my wife would not appreciate it. The process took a lot longer than I anticipated and guess what? I...
I have had my moat up and runnin all year. What I did differently is to make the entrance to the garden gated on both the inside and the outside. If I need to keep the gates open I have light weight gates to block the run like you have set permanently. This way I can let them into the garden...
I really can't remeber where I got them from but it was from a place that also sold pheasant supplies. I got a package of assorted colred bands for a few dollars. Spiral bands are thin plastic tubing cut into lentghs that "curl" up into a circle. Very easy to get on the birds.
I put a small pile of large branches in the run. When I put BOSS down, I throw it on top of the pile. This makes it a little harder for them to get. They have to really dig in the pile to get most of the BOSS.
Do all araucana have tinted eggs? I have one that is 24 weeks old and I do not think she is laying yet. All my other hens (all brown egg layers) are laying. She is definitely at the bottom of the pecking order but I don't think that makes a difference.
Here is my limited experience.
I have had chickens since November and they have just started laying. Since the time they have started roosting, about 8 weeks ago, I have not had to add any bedding to my deep litter because the poop trays collect the majority of the poop. To me this...
You are talking about a chicken moat. I built my coop in the fall and put in 1 1/2 legs of the moat. I will finish this spring. I have some pics on my page here in the forum. You can search on chicken moat here also. Mother Earth news has an article too .
This is my first winter with chickens and mine are only 11 weeks old. The last three morning it has been around zero outside. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was 20 degrees warmer in the coop. I have deep litter on top of linoleum. I have heard that you don't get real composting...
I ended up cutting out a piece of plywood the diameter of the waterer and hanging it a few inches above from an eye hook in the center of the circle. This way there is no room to sit on top of the waterer and when they jump on top of the plywood it tilts. So far it has worked. Thanks for the...
Definitely going to have to do something this weekend. I am cleaning it out every morning. I could move my waterer but it is convienient where it is. I will either try the lid or funnel on a string or put a sloped roof on a hinge attatched to the wall. The hinge is so I can move it out of...
