I don't know much about hawks, other than they LOVE chicken I'm so sorry to hear about your little boy. I have a red tailed hawk that's been here too, for the past few days. My silkies stay put up, but I leave my roo and his girls out. He's very protective and will even protect againist flies...

Good solution! Well my roo isn't nasty at all. he's actually quite the lover, even towards my family. I really think if the chicks hatched outside with him around, he would accept them as "his" and not look at them as a new pecking order to be done. I think that's what's going on.
My Birchen Cooper maran roo who's aprox. 7 months old has been pecking at his chicks lately. My Silkie hen hatched the babies inside away from him. I've been letting the babies free range (with me on guard) but he's going after the chicks. My roo is a great protector, he loves his hens, and has...
My chicks will be 5 weeks on Sunday. I just went outside, my little roo chick, and another chick had each other by the feathers, spinning around, and pecking ther crap out of each other! They tore feathers off the face, and there's a little blood. Is this normal? Do I leave them to hash it out...
He's got Kingpins (father roo) eyes! The other chicks don't have eyes like him. I just love him, he crows around 8am every morning inside. Usually after he hears dad crow. It's been very warm here in Florida, so they spend the day outside in the coop. I still bring them in at night.
This is a sad story and I'm SO sorry for your loss One of my silkies came close to being eaten by a hawk a few months back. I was inside, and heard the awful cry. When I went outside, there sat a young hawk on my patio table. I scared it off, and the silkies came running to me. Only 1 didn't...

The canker sores will disappear eventually. Continue through to the 5th day treating with flagyl. Keep in mind what I mentioned about the copper sulfate.
Thanks, I will def. do the Copper Sulfate. Day 1 he ate the pill inside some bread. Today, I rolled it up in some pizza cheese (...
My laying hens, 4 silkies, 1 SLW like to lay in the same nest. This morning, one of my silkies had been in the nest pushing an egg out, and another hen came over and started growling at her. Next thing I know she's easing into the nest and lays an egg on top of her, then walks out She must have...
Thankyou to ALL that suggested ideas on Kingpins sickness, and a BIG thanks to Dawg53 for all his wonderful, and timely help. Kingpin was making rattling noise, and we thought he had Coryza. Turns out it's Canker, and the Flagyl is working miracles. He couldn't crow for 2 weeks, and today (day2)...
Mama, my silkie mom doesn't want anything to do with her babies, so what does she do? Makes a huge nest, lays (1) egg, and sits. No biggie right? Well she's growling and biting me. When I removed the egg, she ran over and rolled it back! her babies are 4 weeks tmrw. Silkies rock in broodiness...
