    Noobie could use some help

I want to build a coop. I think I can handle most of it but getting started is tripping me up. Here's the deal: I want the coop off the ground so I had planned on putting Four 4"x4" posts in the ground then mounting the floor on top of that. The posts would be 12-18" high off the ground and...

    Is this normal?

My EE mix pullet has added color in the last month. See pic. Top pic was a month ago. Look at her head and neck then look at the bottom pic taken last week. She's added orange to her head, neck and back. It's very odd. She's about 6 months old. Is this normal? Someone said cockerels do this...

    Whoa, pullet adding color?

I got a weird EE/Ameraucana mix this summer with mostly grey/dark brown feathers. She was about 2 months old. Recently as she has gotten older and the cold weather has started up she seems to be added a new color. It's a gold or orange color. You can see it in her neck, top of her head and a...

I guess this is another mutt?

Guy at the feed store said it was a game hen. Looks like a mutt to me. EE mix or something what do you think? The camera flash really highlites the colors in her feathers. In the light of day she looks almost entirely black fwiw.

I didn't expect this when I let them free range

I decided to let a couple of my hens free range. I know a lot of people that let theirs free range. They assured me other than predators the hens will not run away and they will return to the coop before dark. I decided to let two of them out about 2 hours before dark to see if they would enjoy...

Look what my motion sensor cam caught

Lost a couple of bird this year to night time predators so I borrow a cam from my brother and set it up behind the coop. Found one nasty predator sneaking around but there's more. See if you see the other predator lurking around. I didn't see it at first.

    low frequency growling

Got a beautiful Light Sussex cockerel the other day. He seemed happy and healthy but he was doing this low frequency growling similar to a cat purr kind of thing and today I noticed his mouth would gape from time to time. He was eating earlier so I doubt it's gape worm. I got him from a local...

    White with black tail

Just a leghorn mix or what? White earlobes but tail is mixed and there is some black in the tips of his wings. Just got him today after my BO roo died from zinc poisoning. He's so neat the way he struts around letting all the girls know he's the new boss. He mated or tried to mate (took him a...

Be careful with Apple Cider Vinegar

I found out the hard way that it can kill when used in galvanized waterers. I killed my beautiful BO Rooster Jake because I didn't thoroughly read up on ACV. I just heard some people say to use it but I don't recall any warnings given. Unfortunately for me I found out the hard way that it is...

Rooster is leaning forward, not moving much

Out of nowhere he comes up lame like this. He was fine yesterday. Today he was bent over, leaning forward with his head down, eyes closed, not moving unless he sensed something. What on earth could this be? He is molting. He's been dropping feathers for about 2 weeks but I don't think he got...

    Dumb question

How often do you give fresh water to your flock? I share a coop/run with my step father on his property. He just doesn't think they need water but once or twice a week as long as the water pale has water in it he think it's fine. He says they would drink dirty rain water if they were running...

    Lavender/Brown pullet

Picked this pullet up a few weeks ago. She's lavender and brown. Not sure what she is exactly. I guess an EE or some sort of Ameraucan mix. At first I thought she was ugly but she's growing on me and I actually like that she's unique looking. I also like her neck and her sideburns or whatever...

    Swollen crusty eyes

I recently got some Sebright bantams from an old woman who couldn't handle them any more. I don't know if being put into my flock made them sick but 3-4 of the new bantams have developed swollen, crusty eyes. It's only in one eye for each bird. They are not acting sick, droopy, though. I...

    Nest box location

Might seem silly but what's the best place, if any, for nest boxes? I share a coop with my dad. He hangs the nest boxes up high near the roosts. We have 14 adult hens but we only get about 2-6 eggs a day. I think it's because the nest boxes are up too high but what do I know. I would rather them...

    Ameraucana

I bought this little pullet today. The guy told me it was an Ameraucana. Did he lie, fudge, fib? It doesn't show too well in the pics but her neck is blue-gray, very nice color.

    How much DE to use?

How much DE should I use in this 4x4 dust pit? I got a 40lb bag. The instructions are for large scale feeders, not small dust pits so I'm need some advice please. The guy at the feed store said 1/2 lb but that seems awful low but then again I have no idea. It is food grade DE.

    Sebright rooster - lololol

My dad got this today. He's so small and he tries so hard but it's still LOL for me.

    Rooster behavior

I have noticed my Rooster makes a specific call when he sees food. It's a signal to the hens to come get it. A lot of times he won't even eat whatever it is, he's just looking after the girls. Kind of neat. I guess this is probably nothing new to you veterans but it was a cool discovery for me...
