Silly hens, it's just a moth!

Happy New Year! It's quite warm today here in NJ, and a moth flew into the coop. The hens were relaxing on their roosts, and one by one (like a wave) they all perked up to watch this little moth circle the light. Thirteen little bobbleheads on stretched necks all watching it fly round and...

Hens eating peanuts and peanut allergies

I have read topics on this saying this is probably not a problem, but the responses were educated guesses. Has anyone with a peanut allergy actually eaten an egg from a hen that is fed peanuts?

    Anyone have a shoehorn? LOL!

DH excitedly handed me an ad for a free Bantam coop. Holds 3-4 Bantams. We have 15 standard chickens, including 2 huge roosters. He was surprised at my lack of enthusiasm. One of these days he's going to figure out this chicken thing LOL! Just had to share

    I've rescues a debeaked hen-now what?

A neighbor told me a "wild" chicken was coming to her for the past 3 weeks for bread. I can't believe she is alive despite the fox, coyote, hawks, and raccoons here. She looks to be laying age, based on the fluffiness of her behind and her squat when we picked her up. She is healthy and...

Panting and wasting,on Di-Methox for 2 days already. Ideas?

Hi My 26 week old pullet became lethargic 6 days ago, small green poop, poor appetite. My newbie mistake I waited, but after 3 days of force feeding and water by dropper I put the flock on Di-Methox for possible coccidiosis. I know she has been drinking it. Appetite and mood improved slightly...

Hen is squatting while walking, maybe limping?

Hi, My bottom-of-the pecking-order Barrred Rock hen seems to be squatting while she walks. I don't notice it all the time. She had a couple of mating injuries near her hips (the roos are now de-spurred). She looks like she is sitting into her hip as she walks. No obvious pain. Are they prone...

    Flagstones or brick for run?

Hi, my run is flooding. It's on a slight slope and the rainwater is collecting-puddles/mud everywhere. We tarped and will be getting a new roof soon, but the slight grade remains. Would a flagstone or brick "patio" be too harsh on chicken feet?

    Hurricane proofing?

Hi from NJ! I'm sure a lot of us are bracing for Hurricane Irene, which will probably be down to a Cat 2 by the time it reaches my chickens. Do I need to take additional steps to protect my flock and the coop? It's a converted 8x8 shed, put up and leveled on cement blocks by the shed people...

Does anyone have a smoke detector in their coop?

Hi! I am converting and 8x8 shed into a coop. I have electricity in there now, so I'm concerned about fire. I bought a smoke detector, but it says oit may go off falsely in "dusty" conditions. Any thoughts?

Who doesn't love a good dust bath? Well, Ruby my 1 year old had something sticking out of her chest....an earthworm! It had nestled in her feathers pretty deep, about 3 inches or so. THAT's a new one for me LOL!!!
