Shrink bags look much better for freezing than vacuum bags, but does anyone know if they work for chickens that have been split in half? A whole 8# roaster is a bit much for our family so i usually split them and vacu pack that way, but i want to try shrink bagging this time
I'm adding new hens to my coop. Before this I had a friend who had a spare coop for raising the pullets separate from the laying hens that we both could use, but she moved. I've never added hens that were this young. I really cant figure out how to feed them different feed, so will layer feed...

I have an eggbound hen in the bathtub right now in warm water. she's laid one egg,but still looks swollen. Does she have more eggs in there that need to come out?
my pullets are gonna start laying any day now...fer shure
They've started making this odd loud noise in the morning when they get let out. Since they're stealth chickens I am not thrilled. It's not a crow(all girls) or a loud egg laying BAWWWWK, more like a loud barking sound. Any clues what's up?
I've butchered many many chickens, but always with plucking. We have some aged roosters we're slaughtering and I figure it's fine to save time by skinning, they're just getting made into stock for the freezer. When skinning, do you cut the skin off and then cut around vent to gut, or is there...
I've had the chicken bug for years, but it took a sudden decrease in employment for me to decide to jmp into it.
It had to be cheap, and mainly recycled goods
I started with a floor of printing pallets, which are more solid than regular pallets
I had friends over for a coop raising party
A...
So, i got the chicks into the coop, and let them hang out for a week while i built the run. There is both a human door and a pop door to get into the run. i was worried that the human door would let too much cold air in during the winter,so put in the pop. They won't use it. it's only been a few...
I'm reconsidering painting the inside of my coop. The coop will be finished tomorrow, it hasn't stopped raining in weeks and not likely to anytime soon, and my interior is so patchwork that nothing will make it look spiffy. If it's OK to leave the walls bare I would prefer it. It's walled in a...
I see the boards with the rungs on them, but I'm cheap
I had a closet collapse in my house and it turns out the stuff was wrong for our walls anyhow. Could I use the shelf for the chickens to get in and out of the coop?
Here's the kind of shelf it is...
So, now i'm a little worried. I have a coop being built, and my run will be under my bedroom window,at the moment it can't really be helped. There is going to be 25'+ per chicken(8 australorps) and the runs will have 5'+ per chicken. i'm hoping this will keep the smells down. i was planning to...
I work for a wedding cake maker, and we generate huge amounts of egg yolks that don't get used. We all try to use them, but there is only so many ways to add yolks to baked goods and such. Any reason not to cook them and feed them to chickens? Aside from the whole cannibal aspect I mean. We're...
I got my chicks, all alive, and am thrilled. I did the vent check and have one that seemed pasty. The problem is there seems to be something stuck, but not on the vent. If you have kids, do you remember when they were born and the umbilical cord was that dried up little brown thing? This thing...
I got bird netting to cover the top of my rn. The sides will be quite high, 7', so i figured the top needed to be covered mainly to keep hawks out and keep birds in. I'ld rather not pay out for hardware cloth for the top,the run is already really big
Thinnk the netting will work?
I see all these run pics of 2X4s and hardware cloth. It looks like they aren't burying the edges. I worry about raccoons and plan on hardware cloth tied to tposts. I was planning on digging down 10-12 inches to be safe. Thoughts?
Coops have that little door for the chickens to go into the run. If you have an enclosed run do you need to close that door at night and make sure all the chickens have come in to roost? or do they bed themselves down at night and leaving the little door open is OK?
