My darling 9 year old australorp got attacked by a Fox last night. She has a big chunk of feathers missing from the middle of her back and some little chunks of her flesh taken. It is a bad wound but we are blessed to have her alive.
Henrietta, her name, went to the vet and had an antibiotic...
My little ones are only inside by night now. I have two that are 9 weeks old. Temps get down to 12 or 13 degrees Celsius. Are they okay to stay outside now? I'm sick of cleaning up poo in the morning and would prefer they stay out with all the other hens if safe.
We have a silkie who started crowing two weeks ago. He rarely crows and if he does it is around midday or late afternoon. Never in the morning
Does this sometimes happen? Or is it likely to change as he gets older? I am hoping to keep my rooster so am hoping he stays like this.
Last night I picked up this little one. The usual breeder was away and the lady covering her didn't know exactly what she is. She has four toes. I know the other is a silkie with its five feet, but not sure this one. I just felt a connection with her and so chose her. Any ideas? She is one week old.
One week ago my now four week old silkie developed where she doesn't move much or if she does she moves backwards or falls over and her neck looks twisted and upside down. I've been treating it as wry neck, giving her the insides of vitamin E capsule three times per day, some tuna as I read that...
I have a 6 month old Australorp (plus a New HAmpshire x RIR plus Isa Brown). My Australorp has been sitting all day, all night in a nesting box, only occassionally coming out to have something to eat. She wont even wander around the yard anymore. This has been going on for 5 days. I am...
I am really sad tonight. This morning I woke up to find one of my hens dead lying upside down in the nesting box. She was only 9 months old and was really healthy. She was eating just fine, behaving as lively as always the day before. I have three other hens the same age. I looked at her...
I am new to chickens and have pullets roughly at 12 weeks. When I hand feed 3 of them ouch does it hurt. They peck like mad. I get the kids to put a little food in a cup as it was hurting them. Is this something to do with as they get older? Or is it that they are REALLY HUNGRY!!! I have...
My husband has built a nice house plus run that leads out to a fenced off area for them to free range. They are still new to here and are acclimatising to the run. New to chickens he built fencing only waist high. We have an australorp, 2 RIR x New Hampshires and one isa brown. We also have...
I recently purchased four pullets, two RIR x New Hampshire, one australorp and one isa brown. The australorp is probably 9-10 weeks now and the others are likely aobut 14 weeks old. I was initially concerned aobut hte little australorp with the others being that big bigger, but alas she is...
I have four 11 week old pullets I bought a week ago. (an australorp, isa brown and 2 rir x new hampshires). the little australorp is likely a little younger than stated, and she is very friendly and not fussed about us. the others are a little different. They will come over and love to eat...
I recently wrote a post where I wrote about my 10 weekers not going into the house at night. I kept them in the house for 48 hours when I brought them home. Cooped up and hot here, I let them in the run for the past two days. The past two evenings, including just then, I have had to entice...
I am new to chickens. My little ones, around the 10 week mark, were let out into their run yesterday. I had left them in the house only for a few days. They had no idea how to go into the house in hte night time. I had to put them back in myself when it was dark! Poor little things! What...
I have four new 10 weekers. How much should I feed them per day? I have been told that it is dangerous to overfeed them at this age? If true how long until they can self-regulate their own feeding?
Also, when do I stop the grower food and start them on pellets? And when can they have treats?
I've just bought a 10 week old australorp from one breeder, then a RIR x New Hampshire and Isa Brown from another (10 weeks old). I was SHOCKED when I got them home and saw the differences. My Australorp is cute and little, still missing some feathers and chirps. My others are much bigger...

I am new to this chicken keeping. I purchased a rir x leghorn today. Yes, only one. (I will be buying 3 more on Wednesday). Anyway, all was going well, it is a very friendly little bird 16 weeks. Then it started to fly around, up on my windown sill which was fine as I was chopping carrots...
I am after 3 to 4 pullets. How would a silkie go with a cross pullet?
Also what cross breed would you recommend as good with children and decent enough for eggs?
RIR x RIwhite (isa brown)
RIR x New Hampshire
White leghorn/New Hampshire
Black Cross: Australorp/New Hampshire
Red Cross...
The more i look into breeds, the more I want every chicken I see!
I wrote recently about wanting a pullet for eggs and one which is quite and okay around children. I live in a moderate climate but which can sometimes get pretty HOT!
What do you think about chosing a belgian? a silkie? a...
