    Blood loss

Slight emergency here. My cat finally snagged a chick. Thankfully he only hooked it with one claw and let go when I yelled at him. But he did poke a hole in the chick that was pouring blood. The chick lost a lot of blood (for a 2 week old chick). When I got to it and started cleaning it up, it...

    Are they still good?

I'm getting more eggs than I can eat in a week. The weather is topsy turvy and I don't know a whole lot about egg keeping. I know that if the egg floats in water, it is bad. That's it. What if the egg just turns up on one end in the water or just lifts on one end? What if it is cold outside and...

    Pricing

I'm toally new to this. I'm selling a Lav Orp roo tomorrow and I have no idea how to price him, or the hen that is going with him. What should I consider in pricing? Age? What I paid for him as a chick/8weeker? Color? Health? Temperment? Size/weight? Uses? Breeding worthy? I told the lady...

    Eggs still safe to eat?

I have my chickens on Tetracycline, an antibiotic. Two have come down with pox and the vet recommended this antibiotic to thwart any secondary bacterial infections that could result form the sores. Are the eggs still safe to eat? Are they safe too while they have this virus?

    Flies. Annoying. Everywhere.

Does anyone have any tips for keeping flies at a minimum? They're all over the pen and yard. Everywhere the chickens go, the flies are swarming. I'm also having a lot of problems with mosquitoes in the pen area. Even though it's open aire, the mosquitoes congregate in the pen. What do you...

    More mite questions

I have a lone chick that lives in a hutch up off the ground. It's a silkie and I bought it locally. Since I got it, it's had a growth on it's beak near and covering the nostrils. The fungus/tumor/whatever is growing and no surrounds the top madible/beak and is even in the roof of the poor...

Hawk in the yard and my hen makes a better roo than my young roo.....

My birds have the run of the yard for now and I check on them several times a day. Yesterday I ran a cat out of the hutch and today I saw a hawk attemting to flee the scene with a fresh kill (my neighbors bird, not mine). When I first went out I heard Chickie-Lou "bawk-bawk-bawk-BAGAWK" several...

    Tool Advice Needed

I'm planning on building a run using 2x4s and metal joiners. I'll be using a drill and screws this time as the nails just don't come out too easily. I need a good power drill that can handle screwing through a 2x4 (or 2). Money is tight so I need the most power for the least $$. What do...

    Take a guess.....

Here's my two Welsummers. I got them at the same time and soon one had doubled the size and weight of the other but was the calmer of the two. That same one, paradoxically is more agressive and assertive. The other just made a lot of noise and was a whiney-butt which I figured to be the cause of...

    Tracking Your Flock

Does anyone keep written records of their flock? I'm thinking about setting up some spreadsheets to track cost, egg procuction, feed, etc.... I'm a speadsheet whiz and junkie, so that'd be my prefered method. I track everything that way. Does anyone else do it this way? How do you do it? What...

    My neighbor's rooster

Mine and my neighbor's chickens run together (free range) during the day. They go between our yards as they please through a hole in the fence. My neighbor has a small rooster, bantam of some sort I think. He's been getting agressive in our yard towards us. He doesn't come seek us out to attack...

babies crying a lot.... what's wrong with them?

I have two WS chicks that are about 3 or 4 weeks old that have been crying almost constantly. They have plenty of food and water, they have a heat source and are in a plastic bin that's covered (not completely so air will circulate) the only other thing is that the hay is a little dirtier than...

    Runny Nose??

My Bluff Orp has had a runny nose for a few days. Its not all the time and its not more than a sheen that can be seen around the nostrils, like they're a little damp inside. Is this something I should worry about? She has sneezed a few times but at about the same frequency as the drippy nose...

    Hello! New from La

Hi all! I've been a chicken owner for about 5 months now. I started with two pullets (a few weeks old or so, fully feathered but still small) and soon after added four more to the mix. The two bigger girls: Buff Orp and Red Comet, the added days old babies: 1 Black Aus, 1 White Silkie and 2...
