About three weeks ago or so, I bought four RIR chicks from a local feed store and they said the babies were about a week and a half old. They were little fuzz buckets, very cute. As these babies have grown and developed feathers, they just don't....look pretty. I'm not one for looks, it's not...
Oh dear. I just went out to check for eggs and look in on everybody. Had some scraps to throw to the big chickens and they all filed out of the coop into the yard. Went around to where the baby chicks are separated and I was missing one chick. Looked and looked and finally found it over...
I have a little banty rooster who is not so nice.....to us or the baby chick that we hatched out at the end of May. This little rooster has also made a bald spot on the back of one of the hens. Rather than putting a saddle on the hen, I have decided to pen the rooster up in a large dog cage...
Hello, any advice is appreciated!
I had two baby chicks hatch on May 30th and 31st and they've been growing along just fine, until today. Unfortunately, my little dog killed one of the chicks this morning and has gotten a sound thrashing for it. We've had chickens for over a year and this is...
Free to good home, approximately 1 and a half years old, banty rooster, goes by the name of Roy. Black and white. I can provide pictures via email. He's definitely fertile and thinks he's a Doberman. Will not ship, but I'm willing to meet if it's not too far away. Roy is a good ol' boy but...
I need advice!
One chick hatched Saturday, the other chick hatched Sunday. I couldn't get any chick starter until yesterday. They seem to have no interest in it whatsoever. Mama will peck around in it and they come running to see what she's after but when she stops, they lose interest. Out...
Wasn't sure whether to put this in this section or behaviors. I have a banty cochin hen sitting on two eggs, neither of them are hers. Today is day 21, so I'm checking on her regularly. She is separated from the others in a large dog cage and has been doing pretty well for a couple weeks now...
Good morning!
Seems I remember reading somewhere that you can give your hens cat food sometimes to give them additional protein.....is that right? If so, and sorry if this is a stupid question, but canned cat food or dry? If it's dry cat food, what brand is good for them, as in the size of...
A few weeks ago I posted that after quite some time, only one out of my five hens was laying and wondered if some chickens just never lay eggs in their lifetimes. Well, my girls have made up for lost time, it seems. Today I found four pretty little eggs. Such sweet little chickens.
My new...
Hey all, haven't been here in quite awhile. Not sure if this topic has been covered but I'm sure it has, somewhere.
Just wondering....do some chickens just never lay eggs their entire lives? Out of my 5 females, only one has ever laid an egg and she's fairly consistent, sometimes every day...
It's a gorgeous beautiful mild day and all my birds are in the coop. Why? They can go in and out as they please, but they choose to stay inside. Should I push them out the door and close their little hatch?
Hello all,
My little banty cochin started laying eggs a little less than a month ago. She laid an egg daily (she skipped a day here and there twice) but has stopped laying them altogether now. This has been going on for about four days. Is this because winter is coming on and the days are...
This just happened a few minutes ago.....we looked out into the backyard and one of our dogs was chasing one of our pullets. This hadn't gone on very long because he was just in the house seconds before. I quickly opened the back door and she ran/flew inside, while my husband went out another...
I know these questions may seem silly or unnecessary, but I never even heard of a chicken tractor until a couple weeks ago, so I just don't know that much about this.
We have almost an acre, and while it would be nice to have the chickens in the tractor in what I call "the back 40", I don't...
This evening I noticed my birds' feet are looking a little shabby. Seems I've read that people bathe their birds but what do you do, dunk them in a warm bucket of water? Use a gentle spray in a sink? And what about afterwards, what's the best way to dry them? Unfortunately, my chicken run...
Hubs and Boy are out of town this weekend, so it's just me and the critters. A few minutes ago I was sitting out in the chicken pen, just watching them.....Domino jumped up on my foot and just sat there for the longest time. The other three were nearby, all of us quiet and just enjoying the...
Here lately, when I open the door to the coop and Roy the roo comes out, he rushes at me in a strange side-stepping way that he hasn't done in the past. This morning he did it but I was in the process of throwing down their spaghetti and it distracted him.
Is he showing me aggression?
I work part-time in a grocery store and am able to raid the bins where our produce guy throws away the stuff that won't sell. My chickens seem to really like cantaloupe and yellow squash, zucchini and watermelon but apples are only so-so.
I've never tried oranges and the other citrus fruits...
I'm pretty new to owning chickens, so please bear with me.
A friend of mine had too many chickens, so she gave us six of them back in late May. At that time, she said they were about two months old. It turns out that I had three males and three females, and I've been able to re-home two of...
