Candle at 7 days or 10

I usually candle at 10 days but I'm incubating my first batch of SHIPPED Serama eggs and had some detached aircells so I'm anxious. Should I check at 7 days and discard as necessary?? Or should I be patient and wait til 10 days to candle?

    New hatchlings turning eggs. Bad??

The newbies activity in the incubator turns the eggs that have yet to hatch. Would I get a better hatch rate if I prevented them from rolling around the eggs that have yet to hatch? I have a Brinsea Octo20 Bator and have hatched 2 batches so far. First batch was a 94% hatch rate and there was...

How do I get off the spiral legbands?

Any tips or tricks? I used them on my babies when they were a few days old. Now they are almost three weeks and the leg bands are going to be too small very soon. Thanks in advance!

What kind of gloss spray/cream do you use for show?

My dd is taking her birds to fair for the first time this year and I'm trying to get a show prep kit put together. What is the best brand or product you use for glossing the feathers? Thanks in advance.

    Balding Chick???

I have 5 assorted bantams. Two are around 5 weeks of age. Three are around 6 weeks of age. Backstory: The littlest/youngest has been losing fuzz off his/her tummy/butt for a while now. These chicks came to me with severe pasty butt and this littlest one had it the worst. It still cannot poop...

    Emergency! What now?

This is my first time using an incubator. It's the Brinsea octagon eco 20. I bought a pricey digital hygrometer made in the U.S.A. Per the Brinsea instructions, I've been keeping the humidity level between 40-50% at a steady 44%. The temp is at 99.5 F. Today is day 8. I candled my eggs last...

    Random Bantams

Assorted bantams. Any guesses as to what they are? Breed/gender?? This little black one is the smallest. It appears to have a single comb. Feather footed. Four toes. No beard or muffs. This little white one appears to have either a single or pea comb. Not certain yet. Its comb is so...

    Sick bird

My almost 3 year old Australorp, "Blackie", is suffering. She does feel lighter around the breast than usual. Her lower abdomen is filled with fluid. It feels squishy- not like a tight water balloon. Does not feel egg bound. She is lethargic, standing with ruffled feathers and closed eyes...

Does anybody have a Salad Bar growing in the run?

What I did was attached deer netting to three sides of the fencing at the end of the run about 14'' off the ground. Our run is long and narrow about 50'X10'. I put 2 short wide pots and filled them half way with a soil/compost mix under the netting to help support the net when the chickens walk...

Why do Hawks not bother my flock?

Is there anyone else out there that has hawks but not a hawk problem? We have several nests in our neighborhood and see and hear new fledgings every spring but I've never lost a chicken to a hawk. Coyote? Yes. Raccoon? Definitely. Fox? Once. I never even knew Red Tailed Hawks ate chickens...

Harvesting my birds tomorrow by myself. First. Time. Ever.

I've done my research. Have emotionally prepared myself. Now I'm going for it! 3 roos. Have been around for too long. Should have been butchered around July. Been begging my husband to do it but he works 2 jobs and doesn't have the time anymore. My 6 year old is at Grandma's for the weekend...
