This is my six month old EE hen from Ideal, and her chick she hatched yesterday. The chick is half EE/ half SL Cochin. The egg was laid by one of my older EE hens.
She is the third broody so far out of my batch from Ideal, and she is the only EE of mine that has ever gone broody. I have to...
I worked yesterday and so never went out to the coops. Went out to gather eggs this morning and there was not a single egg. I usually average about 15-18 a day so I find it hard to believe that not a single egg was laid.
If I have an egg eater, do hens that become egg eaters eat the shell as...
I'm wanting to purchase some fertilized eggs on Craigslist to put under my broody. Do I need to worry about disease when purchasing eggs? And if so, what do you do about it?
Two babies. They were born 3 days ago. They have been separated with mama from the rest of the flock. Doing great. Mama seems like she will be very protective. Can I let them out with the rest of the flock tomorrow?
She's a BO. Here she is taking a break and all fluffed up because I was too close.
Here are the 6 eggs ( not all hers)
And here she is on the nest
Hatch date is tomorrow, but a couple chicks were starting to hatch tonight when I got home from work. Will (hopefully if all goes well) update...
Went out to collect eggs and my broody was out of the coop. I looked inside and there was a 6 foot long bull snake and only 1 egg in her nest. There had been three. We got the snake out and hopefully far enough away that he won't remember where the tasty eggs are. He had yolk dripping out of...
OK, This is my first year to chickens and I have my first broody, a BO. She has been setting on some eggs since Friday, so about 5 days. I'm super excited! (even though I have 21 seven week old chicks in another coop , I think all you addicts can relate) I just have a few questions:
1. She...
I have a big cochin roo. My old roo had pecked his neck feathers off a bit, and now the girls are pecking the back of his neck so badly it is always red and irritated. I have tried putting rooster booster, pine tar and blue kote on his neck (not all at the same time), nothing deters them, and...
My chickens are being pecked. Mostly around the neck, one on the back. In some areas the skin is getting pecked a little raw. I have rooster booster, but it doesn't seem seem to be working too well. Does anyone have any better solution ideas. What has worked well for you?
Here are some of my chicks from Ideal. I got five extras. They are the ones to the right and left of the lighter colored chick. They have stripes on their backs. Any ideas what they are?
I think the chick at the top of the picture is a red star, I ordered five. The chick in the middle is...
I came home today to find one of my BO hens laying by herself. On closer inspection, someone has pecked her so badly on her neck and back that it goes to the meat. I considered putting her down, but I decided to wait and see how she does overnight. I don't know if I am doing the right thing. I...
I have all standards now and have an order of standards coming from Ideal next Wednesday. I am tossing around the idea of adding some cochin bantams to the order (maybe 5). Should I do it? I'm a little afraid of st run, last year I got 5 st run cochins from Cackle and they were ALL boys.
We went out of town for 4 days and had asked the neighbors to collect (and keep) eggs for us while we were gone. Well, I don't know if they forgot or what but when we got home there were 3&1/2 doz eggs in the nest boxes. It got up to high 60's everyday while we were gone.
Do you think they...
I have six EE's from Cackle, and today i got 6 green/blue eggs
Four green and two blue!
I just ordered a few EE's from Ideal, now I feel like canceling and ordering more EE's from Cackle. I love the coloring of my birds as well.
This may seem like a wierd question, but are cochin roos able to get the job done when it comes to mating. I love my cochin roo, and wouldn't mind getting rid of my BA roo, but the few times I've seen my cochin roo try to get it on w/one of the hens, he fails miserably. He just seems to big...
