Why would a hen refuse to come off a roost? My yr old BO did not want to get off the roost today. Normally she's out by 6 or so and i just now took her off and put her outside. Her crop feels empty, but normal, no injuries that i can see, she has a soft ball size, squishy area in her...
She/he was hatched feb 1st. I have never had this breed before and only have one. I have been told that cm hens can have rather large combs and wattles too but I just want to see what others think about this one
is that even possible? I have a 2 wk old chick thats had pasty butt and her vent is swollen. The pasty butt has all but disappeared in the last 2 days but her vent keeps getting more swollen.
Is it possible that she has a prolapsed vent? How do you deal with that if she does?
has anyone seen this before? Its the bum of my 2 wk old ancona chick. She's one of the 2 that seems to be stuck with pasty butt. I clean her daily, and it didn't look like this yesterday. I haven't seen any pecking in the brooder....there is a little acv and molasses in the water, clean...

i have a cuckoo maran chick, about a wk old, that has a small, hard mass on her underside. Its about the size of a small grape and its "hip" level or so...there is also a small spot between the mass and the vent that looks almost like a tiny vent and it started bleeding a little tonight when i...
i have a couple reg sized silkie chicks coming and don't know much about them. How high are they able to get off the ground to roost? My roost is about 3 ft off the ground, should i make a ladder for them to roost on?
My nesting boxes are also at least 3 ft up. I have room under them. Is...
the soil here in co has alot of clay in it and the saying that the area for the garden is a piece of work is an understatement. I've been working on the soil for 2 yrs and am slowly seeing improvement but between the quality and the heat i'm not pulling in enough produce to make it worth the...
i have a california white that started laying about 6 wks ago. She started off laying an egg 5 - 6 days a wk. She's kept that up until this wk. I haven't seen an egg from here in at least 5 days. The other day i noticed really watery poops as well...not sure if there is a connection
I've also...
the last wk or two i've been finding eggs that have no shell. They have some sort of membrane, like the kind you sometimes find on hardboiled eggs when you peel them, around them. A couple of them were smashed so i could inspect them but a few were intact. Inside they appear to be a normal...
what do you do with all the peppers?!? I usually make some pepper jelly but that takes an hr just for seeding and mincing...i don't always have that kind of time. And i get 6 - 7 pints a batch.
We wouldn't eat them if i pickled them, i have a friend that does the roasted chilis so i don't...
20 wk old california white has been doing the egg song all day, hanging out in the nest, vent looks like she is about to lay...... no egg yet. It would be her first time laying is this normal?
ok. I need some help. My run STINKS!!! Its in dirt and the chicken spend most of their days in their since my Shepard mix wants to chase them. I'm planning on raking it out today and getting rid of the top layer of stuff (poo, leaves, sticks, leftover grass clippings from 3 wks ago, etc...
i know fresh will burn plants, but how long should it age before its safe?
i have a 5 gal bucket i've been putting alot of poo into, along with some shavings and quite a bit of potting soil that was no longer needed (kids tend to drown my flowers when trying to help water). Its been there 3 -...
yesterday it was around 95 here and my chickens looked pretty miserable. They had plenty of shade and plenty of water plus there was a slight breeze.
How hot is too hot for them though? I have a feeling this summer is going to get pretty bad. We were hitting 80's in march
i let mine out for some free range time today and ended up having to put them back in their run so they could get to their coop. They seemed to keep trying to get in but couldn't find the door and the ended up waiting for me on the back step. lol.
Do i have to train them to find the door...
and mine aren't even officially in the coop yet! Our coop will be officially done tonight and my first batch are almost 12 wks old and more then ready to be in there.
I'm already tempted to get a few more now that i have an empty brooder! lol. Must not buy more chicks....must not buy more...
