We were sent too many roosters for our small flock and need to re-home Rod immediately. He's a handsome Salmon Faverolle, 8 mo old rooster. We live in central Vermont.
Rod found his new home today!
Sorry to finally get active again in BYC just when we have bad news...Friday afternoon we discovered a massacre in our yard , where our flock free ranges, generally without problem (in 10 years, only one daytime raid where a single coyote hurried in, grabbed a chicken, and left...years ago, two...
We have some older layers, 4-5 yrs old, and no longer laying much, with the short dark days. Since we'd like to focus our efforts, coop space, and feed dollars on our younger flock of pullets, we'd like to know if chickens that old can still be prepared as good food. We're looking to give them...
I'm just wondering if anyone has found a way to provide a little place in the coop where the hens (or pullets) can dart into when the rooster is after them? Some place too small for him to squeeze into.
Seems like that would be easier than installing a little cold shower for the roo!
The other day I was amazed to see our EE roo crammed into a nesting box next to one of our NH reds! They had both been looking for a nice place for her to lay an egg, searching all over (I had to keep chasing them out of the garage shelves!), making little clucky sounds...then I discovered the...
Hmmm, that's a toughie...as I thaw out my hands (been out doing chicken chores) so I can type...
1. Everything's frozen solid so there's much less chance of my tracking in "little treasures" on our floor.
2. The chickens are so occupied with staying warm, they no longer bother being aggressive...
This is what I did when we had to separate a chicken for a few days, due to flock behaviors, not disease. In other words, we wanted the chickens to still be able to see each other -
I planned on fencing off an inside corner of the coop, so I screwed in a vertical line of ceiling hooks (cheaper...
I hit on this cheap and easy idea for making a roosting perch for adolescent chicks: stand two cement blocks on end where desired in the coop and put a 2x4 or sturdy branch through the upper holes in the blocks. The wood can be wedged in tightly using pieces of old brick, wood scraps, or stones...
Sorry if this has been posted a billion times already, but I couldn't find it in the time I had for a search today (spent yesterday researching pests) -
Yesterday we discovered some of our adult chickens have lice or mites, with egg clusters galore and tiny white crawlies. I also spotted a...
Talk about nutso today! We had an older gal somehow break into the unbreakable other half of our coop with fencing nailed to 2 x 4's, with the chicks (think, breaking INTO Alcatraz!) today... just so she could flap high up on top of a stored garbage bag full of chips - her favorite place in the...
My mind is a blank, other than my chickens pining for the meanie I had to put in an isolation pen. They sometimes lay outside her cage and commiserate. I guess all the color has gone out of their day, now that they're not getting beaten up by Attila the Hen.
I vote for cold winter...two weeks ago I saw geese flying south (early!) and today I saw blackbirds flocking together, step one for their migration. Some of our trees starting turning red in September, and even dropping leaves, which is jumping the gun a bit.
I don't suppose this entitles me to...
Our established flock of 7 older hens who have been together at least 4-5 years, has started acting brutal towards one poor hen. They pick on her mercilessly and seem to take turns running her off the roost, etc. When they free range, she stays off by herself and hates to come back in at night...
I've been reading BYC threads until my eyes drop out and haven't found this covered:
For flock protection, we're thinking of getting a rooster for the first time in 9 years. We like to free range, are currently without a dog after many years (hope to get a compatible one later), and suddenly...
