The gal that has the feed store is wondering if she should get the RLE instead of the DE. I've never heard of it and was wondering if anyone had used it or knows anything about it and what your experiences are with it. Apparently its a mix of DE and montmorillonite which I've never heard of...
I just scraped down my poop boards (4 coops) and I'M starting to think I'm losing my mind! I rather enjoyed it! (sic I know!) I get to visit with my birds, check everyone over and their poo is a great way to moniter their health and any signs of possible problems. It looks so nice when I'm...
I had to post this I'm just so thrilled! Just finished up a staggered hatch of LS. 9 eggs in the hatcher last week and 9 chicks. 9 more eggs in the hatcher that just finished hatching today and 9 more chicks! These are the first chicks hatched from the cross between the 2 lines I have...
I've always used the colored spiral bands til now and need a system for identification that will be more specific and more permanent. Just wondering what has worked and hasn't worked for other chickeners. I'm leaning towards the numbered colored plastic bandettes but was wondering if the...

So I've been very frustrated hatching out LS eggs. Been trying to fine tune it and I tried dry hatch this time and it really seems to be making the difference. I have 12 LS eggs in the hatcher right now. 1 out and 4 more pips and they're about half a day early. So my first LS hatch was a...
Greetings!
For sale is an instant Welsummer breeding flock consisting of 1 roo and 4 hens. They were hatched 12/21/08 from Vicki2x2 and lay nice large dark eggs. I am asking $50.00 OBO. I love these birds but have decided to concentrate on sussex & wyandottes and need the breeding pens...

I'm just curious if anyone uses black blrw's in their breeding pens at all? And if so (or not), Why or why not? Any advice would be appreciated. Trying to learn all I can. I have 2 black blrw hens and the blacks seem to me to have the best type.
Thanks!
Jane
So my SO showed up very proud of himself. He'd been dumpster diving and found me this plant hook. Took me awhile to figure out why it was in the dumpster in the first place!
Figure it out and you can have it. You pay shipping! lol
So thought I'd try hatching eggs under a broody. She's been broody for 2 weeks so I thought I'd put her to good use - bad idea as it turned out. I put 7 buff sussex eggs under her on Tues. For 3 days I never saw her off the nest at all! Then on Fri she was out in the yard and I had to go out...
I'm getting rid of some roos in the mornin and am totally undecided on this BLRW Roo. He is a bit over 5 mos old and the only roo I have from this breeder. I have some hens from this breeder tho. I like his comb. He seems too brassy in the hackles I think and his temperment is not the best...
It finally happened I got bit! Hard! Many many years of different breeds of chickens and many many pecks but this was a malicious bite! It was a BLRW cockerel 4 1/2 mos old and he's huge and he's beautiful. I'm thinking I want to keep this guy so I'm wondering if there is anyway of breaking...
Just received some eggs in the mail. One was smashed. The others look great! Some of the broken egg got on the good eggs and I was just wondering if I should rinse/wash it off? Anyone with experience on this? I'm adding these LS to a line of LS I already have in the bator and really don't...

I posted conditions here in another thread but I think this storm is worthy of it own thread! That and I have cabin fever. Could clean the house but my motivation in weather like this is zilch! Yup - 47 mph winds. About 10 below now with temps falling all day to 20+ below tonight. (without...
I had eggs mailed out to me on Mon last week and with Thanksgiving I wasn't even expecting them til hopefully Sat. On Friday morning here comes the mailman up my driveway! He hand delivered my package because it was marked 'fragile' WOW! Then he asked about what it was and what breeds and...
Ouch. was stacking wood and should have been watching him closer. And i hear a thud and a screech and I knew. He was turning into such a good dog. I was workin in the greenhouse the other day and had opened up the barn brooder to introduce everyone and it was tooo quiet. Kinda like with...
