Hi! We are doing our first round of meat birds this year, heritage birds so they are a bit older but are headed to the butcher in 3 weeks. I was wondering if anyone has advice on what might be a good finisher to help them get a bit bigger? Corn? Veggies? Dairy?
Thanks!:):)
Cold weather chicken question for ya'll. We've been raising chickens for 5 years now, moving batches in and out filling the freezer and egg cartons. For the first time, we are without due to an hen on hen massacre. Anywho, I want to start chicks again, but I have been waiting because its...
Hi! We have a big vinyl siding mildew problem on the side of our house that doesn't get much sun and I need to clean it. I've read that you can use a 30/70 solution of vinegar to water as a natural option, which sounds great to me! My hesitation is that our ladies free range. The are often...
We are a bit worried... Our 3 day old chicks are outside int he brooder with a 250 watt heat lamp. It is supposed to get down to 40 degrees tonight. They are draft free and seem to be running around. Thermometer inside says 75 degrees...?
Do you think they will be ok? Warm enough?
Are...
Hi! We have 15 free rangers and will be adding 15 more chicks soon. It can get awfully hot here and I was thinking of getting a cheapo inflatable pool for the kiddos. My concern is that the ladies may peck at it and send the kids floating on a runaway river if it bursts. Does anyone have...
Hi! We have a backyard free-ranging flock of 15 and have had birds now for 3 years. We started with the girls as tick control and yummy eggs and now are moving onto meat birds. We like the idea of day ranging our meat birds but are curious as to if we really need the electric netting for...

One of my girls got in a ruckus with a fox and isn't doing well. I can see blood around her "ears". I have her in a warm place and have tried to clean her up the best that she would let me. She has drank a little water, when I feed it to her. She does this weird thing, she will back...
Yesterday a fox killed 1 hen and took 2 guineas and 2 hens. He left one wounded and she crawled under a space that we couldn't get her. I thought for sure she was dead. But today she is alive! She is bloody around her head but the hubby was able to get to her! He got her out, she was...
So I have been researching guinea hens for a few weeks now and have decided to get between 3 and 4 to add to the flock. The guy selling the keets said that there are 4 weeks old. I have read nearly everything I can find on this forum and there really is a wealth of knowledge, thanks all for...
Our property borders the woods and we have ticks. I HATE ticks. :somad One of the main reasons that we got the chickens was to eat the ticks. Apparently they can't keep up. what I am wondering is, if anyone has used cedarcide for tick control with chickens? We used it before the chickens...
Hey all!
I just botched a batch of carrot cake by adding too much cinnamon...can I safely feed it to the ladies? I hate to throw it away. It would be 2 round cakes for 10 hens. What do you think?
Thanks!!
Hi All!
This is our first year with a Rooster. He is VERY amourous with our ladies:love, so much so that I need to apron 8 of the 10 girls for bare backs (or the beginning of them). My question is...does this usually continue at this pace? Will he lose his stamina eventually?
I am really...
Hi All!
I have 17 chicks that are 10 weeks old now. They've been in the coop for 4 weeks now with heat lamps round the clock . It is low 30's -20's here at night. Is it time to turn the lights off and let them get used to the weather? If it's super cold we've turned them on in the past with...
We have 4-6 week old RIR (?) free to anyone here in Maine. They were the Freebies with our order from Ideal. We are keeping one of the 5 for the girls. They have been fed all organic feed and are a happy bunch.
Let me know if you are interested. We are in Waterboro. Thanks!
We ordered 12 little ladies from Ideal and well every lady needs a male travel companion so they added 5 guys into the mix. I have NO idea what they are....can anyone help??
And...do you think they are feathered enough to go out to the coop? They are 4 weeks old and getting pretty crowded...

Hey all...
I need to add some new perches for the littleuns but I am torn as to which would work best...large dowels or 2x4s? I have read pros and cons of both....What do you use and why?
Thanks!
We started a year and a half ago with 7 wonderful chicks. They really were perfect (except messing with my flower beds)... So now, thanks to a fox, we have 3 left. I have a hard time thinking of giving them away, but we are about to order 12-15 chicks and worry about adding them to the...
Ugh...He got another one yesterday, my favorite, lovie. :( We thought it was a hawk, but last week I chased of a fox that was 10 feet from the busy road at 5 pm with one of my girls in his mouth! He ran and so did they back to the coop. She was shaken but alright. Then yesterday, 2 were...
