We are getting out of breeding button quail. We've really enjoyed having them and learning about the genetics etc. but there just aren't enough hours in the day.
We have 9, laying pairs (all 6 months and younger) and 29 juveniles. These are about 4 weeks old, and unable to be sexed with total...
I bought a Nigerian Dwarf doe today that is supposedly about 1 month pregnant. I'm giving her hay free choice, but am wondering how many cups of grain to feed her a day. Any info would be appreciated
Why is it the only dimensions I can find on google are for the brooder??
So my question is, what is the square footage needed for ducks? I know with chickens it's a minimum of 4 square feet in the coop and 10 in the yard per bird...is it the same for ducks? (All smaller ducks...Khaki...
Can you tell I'm a little excited?? Redhen and I have an order in with Ideal that is supposed to be shipping this Wednesday I'm getting a trio of Magpies, a trio of Khaki Campbells...and I have 11 blue/black cayuga's from BBB in the bator...and I'm hoping to trade for some scovies
I'll...
Even though I've hatched hundreds of eggs...I feel like a total Newb here! I've succumbed to the temptation of Aubrey's (BoggyBottomBantams) Blue/Black Cayugas and I need to make sure I have everything down on hatching ducklings before they get here.
So...please correct me if I'm wrong, but...
I was a fool and thought my little silkies could go into the coop with my other pullets. This is the result.
I pulled them both immediately and they are back in my basement. Eating and drinking...totally fine.
This is the same pullet with my little boy..
But I'm wondering what I should...
I'm interested in finding some Call Duck eggs to hatch. Please let me know if you have some available, what colors you have and how much (including shipping) you're asking per doz.
I never thought I'd want ducks...they're loud and messy right? At least that's what I'd always thought... Seeing them at the Northeast Poultry Congress show a couple weeks ago...well, let's just say I've been bitten by the duck bug.
The ones at the show that really caught my eye were the call...
Okay...the saga started several weeks ago when Redhen and I were talking about how we both wanted to try raising coturnix quail. This would be Redhen's first time incubating eggs (Ahhhh...the birth of a hatchaholic...what a beautiful thing! ) We decided to give it a try and together, ordered...
Let me start this by saying that I was gifted with 4 beautiful, sweet, pullets from my good friend Redhen. After last weeks arctic weather they came to me with a few little spots of frostbite. I've been using triple antibiotic ointment on them to try and keep any infection at bay.
Now...how do...
Our coop https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=16349 has been finished for a while and has been just waiting for our chicks to grow up Well the wonderful, kind, generous, sweet....Redhen....wants to give me 8 of her pullets! So now I'm trying to finish getting it ready for...
Why is it that when I think I know what I'm doing...I read something else that contradicts what I think I know?
Okay, here are my specific questions....
-Incubation period for buttons and coturnix. (I've heard anywhere from 16-18 days for each...my last buttons hatched day 17)
-Which leads me...
This is just not my week... One of my favorite button hens layed her first egg yesterday...and it killed her. Her skin tore above her vent (about the size of a quarter) and her insides were coming out. We tried cleaning her up and closing things up with Alushield (Aerosol bandage...
Redhen and I went in on a couple of hundred Texas A & M quail eggs (turned out to be a few hundred! ) And I've been trying to show her how you can hand turn...w/out turning each egg by hand. I didn't know if the info could be of use to others...so I decided to post it here...
Line the bottom...
