So I have a 4.5 month old barred rock hen that just started laying a week ago. Over the weekend I noticed she was limping a little but I couldn't see any visible injuries and she didn't do it with enough consistency to tell which foot was worse. The limp persisted and got worse. Tuesday when I...
ok so one of the chickens, the first one to start laying, had decided to no longer lay in the nesting box, and found some random place in the yard to hide eggs.
Well I had been pulling my hair out trying to find it, turns out it was in a fairly simply place, behind a radiator in the corner of...
Well one of the black sex links was checking out the nesting box today, and then was checking out some other places, even went and crawled up under one of my parts cars and was hanging out under there.
Went back with a flashlight an hour later to see if she laid an egg, no dice, decided to...
Well, we got a good amount of snow yesterday, about a foot to 18 inches of the heavy wet snow. Let the chickens out this morning, if it were not for the food they would have not dared to go out into the evil white stuff.(their feeders also wound up buried somewhere!)
Plus some vids:
So I was wondering what you guys would call this, I've noticed that when you expose hens to a new situation, they tend to do the "chicken dance" as I call it as part of establishing a pecking order.
So I have a new batch of chickens, they have been outside now for a few weeks confined to the...
supposed to be female, but "her" developing comb is pinker and a little larger than her sisters, which has me somewhat worried. In the past I have not had good luck getting pullet EE's, and if its a roo I will need to get rid of her.
Time for a build up thread, the 'coons got all my hens, so I started over with same baby chicks. Got 4 black sex links and 4 Aruacana/Ameruacana's:
About 5-6 weeks old now, getting bigger all the time:
Chickens are getting bigger:
I lost my last three hens today.
After getting home late yesterday I only poked my head outside to make sure they were in their coop, I didn't close it up. Well this morning when I went out to feed them I found three headless bodies in the backyard.
It adds insult to injury knowing the...

On a 12-0 vote, the council agreed to allow only one rooster per property unless such birds are part of a "permitted and licensed commercial, agricultural or industrial business" -- and on a street with the proper zoning.
Ok, so this is something of a followup.
I have a year old brown leghorn who hasn't laid in 2 months.
This spring she went through a molt and came out of it in the middle of may. She stopped laying back at the beginning of July. As advised I gave her yogurt, I also put out grit and shell in a...
(this was also posted in the disease area, but felt a double post was ok since part of my post is about egglaying)
Today I came home and went to check on the chickens. One was dead in the basement window well.
So I lost one of my 1 year old brown leghorns. This leaves me with 4 chicken, 2...
Today I came home and went to check on the chickens. One was dead in the basement window well.
So I lost one of my 1 year old brown leghorns. This leaves me with 4 chicken, 2 Barred rocks, 1 Black Australorp, 1 Brown leghorn.
I know sometimes chickens just die and you never know why, but I am...
Been awhile without chicken updates, one brown leghorn just got done going through a molt, and the other brown leghorn one is still going through a molt.
I'm taking care of my dads dog while he moves, and the other day I was out at the brewry and I got a call from my roomate saying the dogs...
So having backyard chickens is not a weird thing to me, pretty normal just to have chickens around.
Well ever since our city council changed the laws and allowed chickens I've gotten mine and shown them off to my friends.
Well now I have several other people seriously thinking about getting...
So about a week ago I picked up a chicken off of craigslist for free, she had been picked on pretty bad and had been recuperating for a month before trying to rejoin the flock. Well I guess she had been traumatized enough that she wanted nothing to do with them. So i picked her up and put her in...
So tomorrow I think I will be adopting a white leghorn from someone here in town. The chicken was getting pecked on by the other white leghorn in the flock, she has been separated from the flock for a month and yesterday she tried to reintroduce the chicken to the flock and the poor thing...
It finally happened, today I got 5 eggs out of the 5 chickens. I've gotten 4 eggs pretty regularly, sometimes even dropping down to 2 eggs a day. But today I got 5, makes me happy.
You can see the 5 there in the back, labeled with the "12":
A guy came by tonight doing a followup on an article from last monday's paper, I missed it so I didn't know what it was. Answered a few questions for him, showed him my chickens.
So then I went and looked up the article:

Ok, so my black australorp has been laying an egg a day for over a week, one of my barred rocks has been laying (I was assuming the more mature of the two I have), and just this past friday both my brown leghorns started laying.
So yesterday I got this very soft shell egg.
Now all my other...
