Hello, we are trying to plan our chicken run addition to the chicken coop. Our babies are 12 weeks old and are gonna need more space. We suck at math and are seeking help with calculations. If we use two 50" x 16' cattle panels and want the run to be 5' high at the top of the curve, and we are...
Good evening BYC, we have a question about chicken funk! Our ourdoor run has gotten funky this spring. Last year was a record drought and there never was an odor problem. But now, especially when it rains, it smells real bad. The covered side of the run stays dry, and has a deep litter of...
Hi Backyard Chickens, heads up on a situation in an subdivision area of the Austin,TX metro area. A lady was forced by a MUD (Municipal Utility District) to get rid of her 5 layers/pet hens and two ducks. Please take a moment to read her story...
an arctic cold front's coming to central texas. temperatures expected to be high teens--30s for about 3 days here. this is unusual for these parts and our hens haven't been exposed to this kind of cold. so i'm not sure if we need to take extra precautions with a heater or something. our hen...
my s.o. is a Do It Yourselfer and has made a repair to an antique wood stove that I am not so sure about...here's the deal. he heats a small workship with what looks to be an antique REX brand little cast iron stove. it's less than two feet tall. i think the back of the main compartment is...
hi there,
we had a couple factors that slowed down the egg laying of our hens. the avian pox went around here about 2 months ago. we stopped eating what few eggs were laid, gave extra nutrition, gave them popsicles and wrapped them up in blankies on the couch (just kidding)...and waited for...
how do, BYC gardeners,
we need to fertilize some newly planted bamboo and probably the other yard & houseplants too. our friend who gave us the bamboo (he's a gardener/landscaper) recommended alfalfa meal. i got some alfalfa pellets at the feedstore instead of meal to save a few bucks. now...
we have 6 chickens who are about 11 months old. since they started laying five months ago, they were cranking out 5 or so eggs a day. even with record heat they still laid like crazy. but the last week or so it's down to 1 or 2. is this normal? these are our first chickens.
hey there, anybody have experience with the "maggot farm"? i hear you can hang a coffee can with holes near the bottom, and put a little something organic in there...the flies lay eggs, the maggots fall out of the holes...free protein for the chickens.
holy crap, i was reaching in the henhouse to gather eggs, look who i found in there!
i don't know who was more surprised, her or me. looks to be a nice big old texas rat snake. i got it trapped in there so my BF can see it and get it out, he likes snakes. she's going for a nice big...
sorry to post on impacted crop, after reesearching a bunch of posts about it i know it can get rather redundant...: ) but i am worried for my Buff Brahma, she had a baseball lump in her crop last night, so i withheld feed today to see if it went down...no luck. two of our other hens had smaller...
hello,
my niece is getting on the chicken bandwagon! she lives south of denver, co. can anyone recommend where to get chicks in that area? she's doing her research now before she gets rolling this summer. thanks.
we're cleaning out the coop for the first time and want to use the poop and dirty hay for fertilizer/gardening. i'd like to use poop to make a fertlizer "tea" for watering outdoor plants, and was curious if this is a good idea, and if so how much to dilute it. same goes for putting the dirty...
we have six hens born oct 3 and one born nov 5. they are just starting to lay, hooray! one of the barred rocks has been laying for about 3 weeks (but the other one hasn't started yet, far as we can tell)
what surprised us through is the the second hen to lay is our Silver Laced Wyandotte...
the girls just started laying about a week ago, we got a cool mutant egg this morning! the shell was like a broken membrane and there was some yolk on the outside...
