we have a hen that has gone broody so have been letting her sit on a clutch of about 14 eggs. today when i went out to feed them, one of the eggs had most of the shell gone with some membrane still around and what looked to be a very wet chick laying in it...it wasn't completely hatched or...
if anyone read my other posts, i just got 5 new chicks yesterday who are suppose to be around 4.5 months old. they are kind of small though, but i have no reason to doubt the gal who sold them to me. she owns the local feed store and i've seen her set-up and she appears to have amazingly...
so we got 5 new gals for our flock yesterday. they are around 4.5 - 5 months old, according to the gal at the feed store. we put them in with our other birds who are much bigger. well, the leghorn newbie got out when we went in to refill waterers, and she won't come back! she is going...
well..we picked up 5 new pullets today.. 3 black jersey giants, 1 salmon faverolle, and 1 danish leghorn. they are almost 5 months old and still quite a bit smaller than my 6 birds here, but the gal i got them from said to go ahead and mix them in...they'll figure it out. well, they did get...
its been a work in progress, but we finally got the yard framed and fenced in and the nesting boxes complete. we are hoping to get 4 more hens and find a home for one more roo... here are a couple pics:

We have our hearts set on getting 2 or 3 pygmy goats for our little backyard farm. Ideally we'd like a mother and baby, and then one more female. We really want to milk at least one of them. Anyone in Texas know where we can get goats? We don't care if they are registered and certainly not...
on these babies of mine? they are about 12 weeks old i'm guessing. not sure how old they were when we got them early last month.. i'm sure they are mutts, but it would be fun to find out some lineage ideas anyway...thanks!!!

well...we were hoping it wouldn't happen, but the neighbor's dog got into the back and somehow managed to corner our rooster. my 4 year old daughter found him up on the neighbor's steps (she loves to go over and hang out with the lady across the street)... i feel terrible because i didn't...
i think i'm on a quest...i am absolutely facinated with blue laced red wyandottes...and just might have to find a couple for my flock. mcmurray has them, but i don't want to order 25 chicks! any ideas? i think they are so very beautiful....
thanks!
here is the thread here with my chicks pics... any ideas what i have here? they were given to me 2 weeks ago from a local elementary school who hatched them for a kindergarten class. they are about 6-7 weeks old now.. i think i've figured out the white one and the black one with the...
we've had them for 2 weeks now, have no idea of the breeds so any thoughts are appreciated! i believe they are between 6-7 weeks old... there are 8 total..these are what they'd let me photograph though..LOL
roo or hen? a cochin of some sort i'm guessing with the feathered legs and feet...
realistically? we have 8 chicks who are about 6 weeks old. the floor of the coop is dirt and i've also put a bag of hay down in about half of it (8x10 space....2 walls are hardware cloth dug and cemented into the ground...the other two sides are wood and metal siding...it is actually a space...
one of my 6 week old chicks (aprox. that old) is feathering out in browns, chocolate brown, black and beige...very lively shades of brown. yellow feet and legs...regular looking comb (i'm pretty sure she is a she as her comb is still yellow/pink and small). she's very lively and flies around...
our's are about 5-6 weeks old and have been in the coop just fine. we don't have roosts in there yet though and i'm wondering if my husband needs to get that going soon. also, how high should they be off the ground? and do you all suggest a droppings shelf of some sort? we have 8 chickens in...
what breeds are mainly white? we were given 8, 5 week old chicks from the local elementary school and have no idea the breeds. one of them is snow white with black flecks (she looks like someone took a paintbrush and dipped it in black paint and then delicately just flecked around her wing...
i know for us, it was around 18-20 weeks...but someone just told me 18 months. that seems like a long time. our first batch were hatched in march and started laying in august sometime....
