I've been noticing lately that some of my chickens, including roos, have had diarrhea. You can actually see it on the feathers around the vent. It's dark colored and very watery. I haven't seen any blood in it yet, but one of the roos does look like he has had some bleeding around the vent...
.... and now that they're hatching, there are only two left.
So I had a hen go broody a while back (at least 3 weeks ago) and it's her first time. Well, either she isn't a good mother yet or she really has no idea how to stop breaking eggs.... Yes, the nests are lined and padded. So she starts...
Some of you already know that I got a new camera a while back and you also know that I've been wearing it out. Well Spring is my favorite season and after a couple of seasons of naked trees, brown grass, and that general grayness that usually comes in winter, needless to say my camera is getting...
I'm looking for something cheap and I'd prefer not to go the "new" route.... I can also make a trade (partial or full)... I turn wooden eggs for decoration and also nest eggs. The nest eggs work very well by the way. Pullets don't know the difference.
So... Bator with turner for wooden eggs...
Warm-fresh-outta-the-oven yellow cake.... With fudge icing.... I know little of cooking, so I did the next best thing.....
Chocolate covered doughnuts.... MMMMMMMMM BOY!!!!!!!!!
But still the cake lingers in my head....
~Ode to Cake~ (A Joe Original)
So seldom a cake is seen,
That will ever...
Found this fugly thing near the house. Just sit there and watched me take pics of it. Looks like I'm gonna have a field day with snakes if they keep popping up like this. At least it doesn't require a really sharp ax....
This has happened to a few of my pullets so far. I find these blue-ish, fat, ticks on their heads and they have swelling in that area. Wasn't expecting them to come out this soon. Guess I'm getting some dust for their dust baths asap.
For those of you who don't know, these blue ticks can...
So I opened up the coop today and that's what I found... I was not expecting one this soon. My chickens are 5 months old and I suddenly realize how time flies. I really wasn't expecting this for another month. Time to start on some laying boxes....
BTW, out of 22 pullets, I have no idea which...
I've looked on the web for one of these, but have only found closers which seem to be made of garage door components. Closing the door is no problem for me since I like to make sure all my chickens are in the coop before I close it up anyway. However, it would be really nice to have it...
I am looking at turning nice, wooden eggs for decoration. The plan is to turn out a dozen eggs from 12 different kinds of wood. I also make little egg cups for these. These are all roughly the same size as chicken eggs and finished so that they have a nice satin sheen to them and are very...
So I went to check the water in the coop a little while ago which just so happened to be frozen... It's ok... The chickens have fresh water running outside...
So the waterer was frozen pretty solid. Less than 20 degrees here all day. It was frozen so well that I could not twist the bottom off...
.... does it take to change a light bulb?
1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs
27...
So I have this little fellow who is much smaller than the rest of the "chicks"... I say "Chicks" because they aren't quite grown but all of them excluding two have almost fully feathered out. Well, when I got these, McMurray sent 28. Someone screwed up and sent about half sex-links which is...
Or birdhouse builders? I started doing this early this year and had several bird boxes made up for a few different species of birds. Made up two for Eastern Bluebirds, 2 for Carolina Wrens, 1 for Chickadees or Titmice, and another for either Screech Owls or Wood Ducks (Depends on how high you...
So my niece came for a visit this week. She isn't very old at all. 8 years I think... Well, yesterday I was letting my chicks run amok (or free range) like I usually do everyday. I like to keep a close eye on them and will pick them up to see how they adjust to being handled. I brought one of...
Well it's around 30% anyway.
Everything under the floor is metal. Z-channels for joists and such with screws in everything. Chip board for the floor and a lot of used lumber for the frame. There is very little new lumber going into this.
We have a big stack of pine that my Dad had cut into...
I'm fairly new to the chicken business and am learning as I go. I plan on selling eggs, fertile eggs, chicks, chickens. Since I am getting serious about this, I was wondering how everyone that is in the chicken business started out. How you got your buyers, how you started raising chickens for...
Through selective breeding, is it possible to get high quality chickens from chickens that were bought from a large hatchery?
What I mean is, by selectively breeding the birds received, to acquire the characteristics defined for that particular breed.
Would this be possible? If so, would it...
So when I ordered my Black Australorp chicks from McMurray, I asked them to send me one of their free "Rare and Exotic" chicks. What I discovered a few days after I had received them, was that I had three extra chicks. One of the Aussies died within 48 hours and I didn't think anything of it...
When I ordered my Aussies, McMurray offered to send an extra chick of the rare and exotic type. Inside the shipping box was a sticker that said "cockerel" along with someone's chicken scratch (no pun intended) that said, "Smoked Blue." Well the chicken doesn't look very blue to me right now, but...
