OK so I got a drake for my Rouen hen and tested out her eggs found one fertile and growing and it hatched to day.. but HUH? This doesn't look like a Rouen duck.. or at least not what my hen looked like when she hatched. It's the only ducks I have out there at this time as the Muscovy's when...
I bought a pair of Toulouse geese last weekend, they were bought with a pair of Brown Chinese Geese. Was told both sets were laying or I wouldn't have bought them. I re homed the Brown Chinese as they weren't working for me as I wanted to focus on the Toulouse, well during this time I got two...
Up for sale a pair of Brown Chinese Geese. They were bought over the weekend with another pair of Toulouse Geese. I only want to keep the Toulouse Geese so I'm selling this pair.
I was told that the gander is 5 years old and the goose is 2 years old.
I have not seen this pair breeding as I've...
My Rouen keeps liking to hide her eggs. I found two and decided to throw them in the bator. I candled them today.. granted it's only day 2 but I saw this blob.. Maybe potential for being a fertile egg? Guess I'll know in a few days..
Ok picked up two baby Pekins a few weeks ago at TSC. One had some slight black on it's back I figured ah no big deal it makes it more interesting looking. Well it appears the black is getting bigger.. Cannot tell if feathers will be this color as it still has baby duck fuzz..
About how old can you tell a chick is going to be a roo? Having the worst luck with roo's vs hens (about 75%) when I buy unsexed chicks.. I think the blue copper maran's I have are going to be both roo's :(
These chicks are just over six weeks old. I'm thinking out of the five left I have maybe two hens and three roos. I think they are roo's because they look to have large combs that are more red than the others they are also developing more. Also they are starting to challenge each other, not...
He/She is also not eating, will drink if helped. Doesn't want to move much was preening it's feathers in the brooder. On occasion she would have episodes of labored breathing and was laying under the brooder lamp with her beak open but did not want to move out from underneath it.
I bought...
Very friendly chicks.. two Blue Marans, two Aracunas, one Black Maran I was told pullet, and another Black Maran X that looks almost like the full bred chick..
This is Day 13. They will be going into lock down on Wednesday, being a newbie though I want to make sure my air cells look appropriate for the time frame as my last disastrous batch the air cells were way too large. This photo is enhanced to show the cell and veining.. I'm going to try to...
Picked up my local hatching eggs today, incubator set it has been holding steady at 99-100 degrees with humidity 45-50%. The eggs feel a bit cool to me so I'm letting them warm to room air and will set them tomorrow.
However given my lack of success with my last batch had a few questions...
Last year when I had the ducks I just did 2x2's with chicken wire. So decided this year just to put together something with the stuff I had on hand. Decided to make a brooder cabinet out of an old TV stand that I was going to throw out anyway.. I cut out a rectangle on the top placed hardware...
Was winter cleaning over the weekend and found an old utility tub I'm not using. I came across this build the other day https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/the-sink-a-bator and was wondering if anyone else had made it, what their average hatch rates were, and what thermostat they used?
If anything hatches out of these eggs it will be a miracle. These were my disastrously shipped eggs.. Out of the 14 one was broken, one was discarded d/t double yoke, out of the remaining so far, 2 were frizzle Cochin's one is clearly developing good movement, can't really see vascular well...
I'm currently using a borrowed Hovabator I was looking to purchase a Brinsea octagon but the seller did not want to meet at their home I'd have to go to a shopping district and wouldn't be able to test.
I'm just using it for an occasional hobby hatch.. I was thinking of getting the manual...
Any thoughts on this model? I'm currently using a borrowed Hova Bator but found a deal for a Brinsea Octagon 20 digital on a local selling board for $150.. I'm planning on hatching more eggs and in the spring hatching out some ducks if my Pekin's get their act together.
Any pro or cons...
I did have a successful hatch last year of some Pekin, Rouen eggs... :)
So I bought some eggs off eBay they were supposed to be sent priority mail ended up arriving a week late. Seller barely wrapped the eggs and I was surprised I only had one broken. However one was huge I figured double...
I have a Rouen and Pekin hen.. I also have a Pekin drake.. I figured what the heck I would try incubating some eggs and no go they are all infertile. I hatched these chicks last May.. is the Drake too immature or is it the wrong season right now?
