Hi. I'm taking my muscovys to "freezer" camp today. Is there a proper way to pick these guys up? I am aware of the inner claw on their legs and such. I've heard that you pick them up by the base of the wings??? I'm not too sure of the technique involved here. Thanks for any advice.
Hi. I have 15 chickens that free range (altho the pickings are pretty scare going into winter here). I also feed four penned heritage turkeys. I am going through a 25kg bag of lay pellets per week. Is this enough, not enough, too much. They are always hungry or so it seems and there is never any...
Hi. I just bought 10, six-month old RIR "ready-to-lay" pullets a week ago today. I've so far collected four eggs. Is this due to adjustment period or when the say "ready-to-lay" do they mean the laying age or the actual laying behaviour? Thanks!
Hi all. I have a quick question.
Here's the warm up first. I have 24 chickens, 24 muscovys (soon to be down to 16) in a couple of weeks. They are all very healthy and free range on 5 acres everyday. I am wondering if I am hitting the mark with feed.
Before I let out the chickens, I feed a...
Hi everyone. Hope you are all enjoying a wonderful Autumn.
First a little background:
-I have a mid sized coop approximately 15x10 feet inside and the birds free-range on my five acres throughout the day, summer and winter.
-I have one flock master, who is a mild Golden Polish, two 6 month...
Hi everyone. I have four young muscovys approximately four months old. These are a new breed for me. I have a adult male and several adult females but these guys just aren't developing any curunkles yet. I'd appreciate any input and thanks for reading!!
Hi everyone. I am looking for an easy way to take my turkeys to get processed. I'm planning on using a large wire dog crate but that may not hold all of them. Any ideas for me? I've considered a cardboard box but they (the birds) are heavy and big. Appreciate it and thanks for reading.
Hi. I have eight turkeys which are penned. I hatched them myself and, for a time, they were very tame and personable...and in ways still are. This is my question tho...
Since they have somewhat matured, whenever anyone goes down by their pen, the males will puff up and strut. Also, when the...
Hello everyone. I have several SWB turkeys that are 6 months old now. For the last two months, they could not seem to get enough to eat. I was running food down to their pen three or four times daily. Now in the last week, they've laid right off. They are in good health and they are eating but...
Hi everybody. I have a bit of a problem. I purchased a beautiful golden polish rooster last Fall. I wintered my chickens over with some rouen ducks in the same house (bad). The rouens were aggressive and mean and it got worse toward Spring. The ducks picked out my poor little rooster's wiggy...
Hi everyone. Hope you are all enjoying a great summer.
I have a question with regards to "processing" my small beltsville white turkeys. Mine are approximately five months old, give or take. I realize they take a while to fully mature.
They are eating me out of house and home :) Constantly...
Hi all. I have 12 chicks that are almost 3 months old. They are currently outside and free-ranging on their own away from my four full grown chickens. I'd like to join them up. Is it too early? I'm thinking that I will put them in the coop for a couple of days in sight of but separated from the...
Hi. I have a little silkie hen that has 12 eggs in a nest. She goes and lays one about everyday. How many will she put down before she decides to brood them? Is she going to brood them? She isn't over there too often throughout the day and doesn't sit on the nest at night so I'm wondering if I...
Hi everyone. Here's a question for you. I have a bator full of chicks--one day old and some still hatching out. I want to remove them to the brooder. I thought I had chick starter but oops I do not. I do have some turkey starter (medicated) left over. My farm store is not open on Sundays...can I...
What is up with this rooster? A Golden Polish, he has several hens and he dotes on them. He shows them where the food is and although he is a bit scatter brained and hyper, he tries his best. He's always alert for aerial attacks - real or imagined...so all in all he is doing everything a rooster...
Hi everyone. I have a bit of a mystery on my hands. Spring has somewhat sprung here in Eastern Canada after a very hard and cold winter. I recently cleaned out my coop which was pretty bad with ammonia and the like. All was going well and everything seemed to be great until I went into the coop...
So, I have three-two week old turkeys in a brooder box. They are doing well (after we got the eating thing figured out!). My next hatch started arriving this morning. My question to you is: CAN I PUT THE NEWBIES IN WITH THE TWO WEEK OLD GUYS? I don't want them picked on or anything. Is there...
Hi. I need some advice. I hatched out three white beltsville poults five days ago. They are in their brooder box, drinking and being baby turkeys:). Here is my problem. They haven't figured out that food = survival. I have turkey starter in there...they ignored it. I decorated it up with shiny...
Hi. This hopefully won't get too lengthy but here goes....I have the following set up: 17 chickens, 4 rouens, 5 muscovys. The muscovys are new having brought them into the fold about a month ago. The pen they all share is very big along with a large outside area. When I brought the Muscovys home...
