Hello,
We had a hen house massacre on Thanksgiving day, our neighbors bulldog was loose and I wasn't aware of it, I let my hens out in the yard for their daily excursion. The neighbors dog came into the yard and killed two of them. Does anybody use shepherd dogs to protect their flock? Is there...
I think I have a problem, I've had 3 laying hens for the past couple of years, I just recently added a couple of pullets and a rooster. I no longer have any eggs. Today I went to the coop and saw an egg broken open and had obviously been eaten. Is there any way to break this habit? What should I do?
I've had my 5 hens for a year now, only one of them is broody, she sits in the nesting box all day long. I havent seen her get out at all. The other hens go about their business, when i go to gather the eggs, she growls at me and tries to peck me. I can still get the eggs, and I dont mind, but...
i keep my 4 new chickens in a box in my basement (they are approx one month old) i took them outside in a larger cage for some fresh air and grass etc. They were fine when I put them back in their box last night. Today I discovered one of them dead, with its guts hanging out (assuming the others...
I've had my pullets for almost one year. I have 5 and have only been getting 4 eggs each day. I have one Australorpe, 2 speckled Sussex, 1 Lace Winged Wyandotte and 1 Barred Rock. The Barred Rock has a larger comb than the others, I don't know if this is a characteristic different than other...
I'm planning on getting a silkie or two, but was wondering how well they climatize in the cold weather and am I gonna have a hard time introducing them to my older hens when its time. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I have a mixture of hens, I got them in May of this year, the Australorp started laying about a month ago, followed by the Lace Winged Wyandotte, I have yet to get any eggs from the Speckled Sussex or the Barred Rock, the weather is like a roller coaster here in East Tennessee, It has gotten as...
I used 5 gallon buckets for food and water. The buckets are placed on top of a wooden pallet covered with hardware cloth to keep debris out of the food/water. I cut a small hole in the hardware cloth under the water pan, placed my heat lamp upside down with a 40 watt bulb,
with the cords...
Here is what I did today to winterize my waterer, I use 5 gallon buckets for water and feed, galvanized tin pans, a heat lamp and extension cord. My waterer/feeder are on top of a pallet covered with hardware cloth. I put the tins on top of the buckets to keep the poop out of the water/food...
Finally got my first eggs, got my chickens in April and they are starting to lay now. So exciting, was expecting very small eggs for the first time, but these were good size.
I came back from my vacation, went to check on my chickens, and one of them was holding its leg up, when i looked closer, I noticed a couple of its toes were missing. I'm new to the chicken thing, is there some kind of chicken foot disease they can get, or did something, somehow eat its toes...
I am a new chicken owner, I have 6 pullets, approx. 3 1/2 mos old. They totally ignore the nesting boxes now. Will they eventually go to the boxes when time to start laying, when should I start putting fake eggs in boxes to coax them into the box? They will casually look at the box but dont...
I just got new chickens, they are approx 2-3 weeks old. one of the chickens already flew from one side of the box to the other, at what age do I need to clip wings? and what are thoughts on clipping wings? good? bad? I'm very green at this, I have no idea.
