Bantam breed with frequently layed, easy to peel eggs?

This may sound strange! I keep bantams just for the ability to make small, "popper", sized deviled eggs. I have Japanese bantams (whose eggs peel much easier than my other standard breeds), but don't lay very often. I am looking for advice on a bantam sized bird that frequently lays small...

Can silkies get along with other chickens?

Or will the others beat them up too bad? I have standard EE's, standard Barred Rocks, a standard light brahma, and Japanese bantams. I want to increase my # of bantams, but don't know if silkies are the way to go. I am thinking about them because they are easy to get and they should lay much...

    Dead chicken/another sick - vet thinks Marek's

I had a 5 month old pullet die this past week and now a 6 month old cockerel is showing the same symptoms. They have lost a lot of weight despite continuing to eat. They have lost some motor function (they won’t fly up to roost, if set on their side they will have trouble standing). I took...

    Food importance?

Local feedstores don't carry turkey feed; only NONmedicated gamebird feed. What is more important, the medication in the chick starter or the protein in the gamebird starter? Which feed should I be starting with if these are my only options?

    incubation question

I know that guineas take a week longer to incubate than chickens, but do some of the developmental milestones occur at the same times? Can I candle at day 10 to check for development the same as with chickens?

    dewormer question

It was recommended to me to deworm my laying chickens with "safeguard". This is a equine dewormer and a gave each chicken a very small dose. Afterward I saw a warning on the label that the product is not to be used on horses intended for food. The chickens are not going to be food, but their...

    Fox bait for live trap?

Any suggestions for a good/lasting bait for foxes? I have been using raw pork ribs or hip/leg bones, but if they don't go for it on the first night the bait dries out the next day and isn't much use. I need something that doesn't dry/spoil in this Florida heat. Thanks

    N. Central Florida BYCers - two free roos

I need to make some room in my coop. I bought these guys at a week old off of a craig's list add and they were supposed to be White Rock hens. They are a bit over a month old now. Well, I don't think they are hens or white rocks. They are getting larger combs and waddles and their color...

    LG circulating fan question

For those of you who wired a computer fan to the LG still air. Did you use a fan that accepts 110 volts and wire it straight to a plug for the outlet? The guy at the computer store said that he only had fans for 4 or 5 volts.

No longer unknown predator - update 4/12

I have 5 completely free ranging OEG chickens who roost 50+ feet in a tree next to the house. This past Sat. (the only day of the week I am not up and outside before the chickens are down) I found a trail of piles of feathers, and one chicken missing. The others were all spread out in...

    LG incubator fan

I just bought the LG still air incubator. I have 14 e-ggs in there now and will see this hatch to whatever end with the incubator as a still air. After reading several posts and other online sources and dealing with temperature variation in my own setup I want to add the circulating fan. My...

    Too young or too cold????

I have 12 chickens total: 6 bantams (7 weeks old), 4 EE (5 weeks old), 2 barred rocks (4 weeks old). They have out grown their brooder and I moved them outside into the coop this morning. We live in North central Florida and our nights are in the 50's right now. Is that too cold for chickens...

I am going to put my first chicks out into the coop here soon and I was wondering if I should block off access to the nesting boxes until they are old enough to lay eggs. Any thoughts?
