    Sarah giving up?

I think my little Sarah is giving up. Two months ago, her eye got infected and swelled to the size of her head in a day. I was putting the young un's to bed and she came out of the coop and I took one look and swooped her up, finished the chores with her in one arm, and made her a comfy bed in...

I have a question about Clostridium perfringens

Can one bird in a coop have it? I had thought that it was from it being so hot lately, but just read about it and was wondering, since it is caused from "off" food or bad meat, and all of the chickens in that coop eat the same thing, but only one has a real watery poop, could it be possible that...

    Shipping issues

Can't say I am very happy with the PO right now. Jwhip sent me 11 NH chicks and 14 BR chicks. Somewhere, during the shipping process, the box was damaged, and seems they opened the box to check the chicks. The NH's arrived fine, the little BR pullets, 6 were splayed led. I got 4 of them...

    Need somenhelp with ventilation issues

Yesturday I made a DIY water heater. Works great. Maybe too well? The issue I noticed is that the coop iced up, walls, door windows.... Now I had the windows open, the top vents open...the thing is, we are running between 75% and 100% humidity....with subzero temps. I have tried opening up...

    Pullets fighting over nest boxes

So far, I have 5 laying...there are 6 nest boxes but they fight over one of the end boxes...only one of the end boxes, to the point of me having to stand guard while one of them lays...I know I should let them work it out for themselves, and usually do, as from time to time, I will find an egg...

Possible solution for late laying pullets

Just wanted to share this incase others find it helpful! My pullets weren't laying. 31-32 weeks, no eggs. Long story short, I caught my cockerel violently trying to mate with one of the pullets a few days ago and shoved him off her. The girls, the next day or so, took matter into their own...

Are they getting ready to lay?

I have 14 BR pullets that are just about 17 weeks, or a little over 4 months. Quite a few are really red faced, they are all over the one cockerel I have, the last few days and won't squat for me, but do for him. He is trying to hide from them, as they just won't leave him alone., I have a...

    Mystery worms? Could be gapeworms?

Thought I would start a new thread, in the hopes that maybe someone else could use the info I am gaining on my own birds. I noticed one of my birds gaping, than another and possibly one more. They had liquid dark brown, runny poop. I started researching worms and came across a lot of info on...

Roosters and laying feed, why is it bad for them?

I know I have read this lots, and tried to search for it in the top search box, but can not get anything remotely like it to come up in the search. I would like to know what it is about layer feed that is not ok for roosters and what, if any, the symptoms would be, for a rooster that has been...

Article about "Hobby Farm Chickens" and diseases, very good article

Although the article only mentions some of the diseases that are prevalent in the back yard flock, it is a well written article with some great advice! A great read for all of us, those that have chickens for a bit and the new chickens owners...highly recommend...

If anyone is online I need your help ASAP

I was gone this morning, before I left, I watered and checked the chicks. All was perfectly fine. I came home, and the manager had been nailing tar paper to their coop, with them IN IT. I noticed a few spots of diahrea, so kept checking them, through the rest of the day. Went out with their...

OH MY GOSH THAT WAS AWESOME

Well, decided tonight I was gonna let the lot out. Found some chicken wire I forgot I had, 2 feet high, but kinda long, so made a makeshift pen, set up my chair with guiding stick and opened the door. Wayyy better than tv!!! Two got pushed out, as 15 chicks in a 3 foot door just aint...

Does anyone have unfinished run, but let their chicks out? If so, how?

My flock, 15 BR's, 5 weeks old. Our run is not finished, but my guys and gals want to go out so bad....I feel horrible...they follow me to the door, every time I am out there doing chores...a "play pen" wouldn't work, in the event of an escapee or two, as I couldn't catch them. They run way...

    Funny chick stories

Was out socializing with my 4 week olds today and went outside to open the windows up wider and this grasshopper made the mistake of climbing up the outside of the coop. So I decided to catch it and bring it in to the chicks! Now, when I first put my chicks out in the coop last week-end, I...

How do I tell the difference between chicks fluffiness from heat or begining of cocci?

We are experiencing a heat wave, as most of you on the east coast know. I read an article that said if you have fluffy chicks, they have cocci. I am feeding one bag of medicated feed to my chicks. They are now 3 weeks and 3 days old and I moved them out to their coop, last Saturday. I have...

Heat and chicks, for those interested this summer heat, what I have done

First off, I have 15 hatchery Barred Rocks. They are now, 3 weeks and 3 days old.The first week, they in NO WAY could tolerate the 95 degree temps, that is recommended!!! I moved the light up, and up again, still no go, the chicks were still hot. I changed out to a 40 watt regular light bulb...
