    First Snow..a few questions

This is our first year having chickens and enjoy it so much and want to be sure we are doing everything right. Today was our first snow and we had an inch and a half. The girls have not came out of their coop yet and thinking they do not like the snow or is this normal during the colder months...

Roo missing feathers, scab and red skin

We have a 6 month old Barred Rock Roo and noticed a few weeks ago that on his behind he is losing feathers and has red skin on his butt. Since there were feathers coming in I just thought it may be a molt, but now it is continuing further down and now up on either side of his tail as well with a...

5 month old Roo lost feathers just below his butt

Have noticed that our Roo has lost his feathers just below his butt. Our hens are just fine and no feather loss. Is this something typical for a Roo this age and since he is sexually active or could something be going on with him?

    Egg color has changed

I have noticed the last couple days that one of our chickens is laying a little bit lighter brown colored egg with small spots compared to the medium brown color she was laying. What constitutes the color their egg is and what can cause it to change? The only hens that are laying out of our 9...

    Limping Barred Rock

Yesterday we noticed that our 18 week old BR was limping on her left foot. They just started actually using there new coop and roosts a couple weeks ago and I am wondering if she just fell off the roost and landed wrong since there are still clumsy on the roosts and walkways. Have looked at her...

Question for anyone with AEP for the electric provider

Hope this is where I should be posting this. My husband and I have been thinking of going with one of the alternate energy suppliers for our Aep service, such as Direct Energy, Aep energy, Dominion, etc since they provide a cheaper rate. Has anyone else here in Ohio or other states done so. If...

    Dusted with DE last night...

I dusted the run with DE last night and woke up this morning and saw they were calling for rain today...which it is doing now. Do I need to re-dust when there isn't rain in the forecast and things dry out? Being a newbie I will learn from this error if so. Also how much DE would you use for a...

Nutrena versus Rural King "Country Road" Layer Pellets

Our girls are now ready to be switched to the layer pellets and our local feed store carries Nutrena (the girls were raised on the grower crumbles) and also the Country Road brand. Has anyone had experience with both of these?

    How often to use DE

I am getting ready to purchase the Food Grade DE (suggestions of where to purchase are welcome as our feed store doesn't carry it) and wondering how often you guys dust your coop and run and approximately how much you use each time. We have 10 in our Flock and I was looking at maybe 10 pounds...

    3 Feathered Mysteries :)

The following are all 9 weeks old. The following picture is of an Easter Egger , we think (was sold as an Aracauna at a feed store)...all were pullets we were told but we are guessing this is definitely a Roo considering the saddle feathers, comb and rust colored splashes on the back and wings...
