Last night when I checked the coop I found a ratsnake coiled around my 2 months old Orpington :( The check was dead and her buddy a 2 months old Brahma was very distressed.
I took the Brahma out and had hubby get rid of the large ratsnake. (We had previously lost two other checks same age to...
we've loved our chickens for over 3 years now!
one turned out to be a rooster and we had to rehome him.
one went into early chicken menopause and stopped laying a year ago.
and sadly my little boy put up the chickens last night without counting them, locking 2 chickens into the coop and 3 OUT...
I create these out of brand new socks made with recycled cotton.
10% of my profits go to a spay and neuter program.
Check them out. You know you want one!

We found an egg today in the coop.
The chickens are only about 17 weeks old and with the heat I didn't expect them to lay until later.
I have a bag of Layena ready that I was going to use next but as of right now the chickens were still on the medicated starter (Purina's red bag).
Does that mean...
My chickens hatched end of February/ beginning of March and won't lay until September, right?
So I have left them in the coop (mostly a big covered run with roosts, etc. because we're in South Texas) thinking they should stay there until they start laying so they start laying in the nest boxes...
This spring I ordered chicks by mail for the very first time.
I chose Meyer's because they have a small order program that includes Express Overnight shipping and heatpacks, etc.
They packed the chicks on Monday but didn't ship until Tuesday, the posty office delayed the shipment one day as well...
I had to give our favorite chicken away today because she turned out to be a rooster.
My son (he's almost 3 years old) had raised him from the time he was 2 days old.
All of our chickens are fairly tame but this was the one that would sit down on our lap to be petted and I loved that.
I...
When I got this chick she was almost black with a perfect headspot. I picked her out of a brooder with Cuckoo Marans but apparently only her dad is a Marans because she is HUGE and unlike her sisters she has yellow legs.
Her barring also looks more similar to the BR chick than to her CM sisters...
Is there a noticable difference in how the chicks of Golden Cuckoo Marans and Silver Cuckoo Marans look?
(or do the differences only become noticable when the feathers grow in?)
Initially we were thinking of something free standing like the playhouse plan but then we decided it would be more out of the way right next to the barn. It's on the east side to get morning sun and then have some shade in the afternoon when it gets hot:
Here are some close ups:
It's a very...
maybe not a pullet?
or maybe not a Marans?
All of my chicks are around 4-5 weeks old.
I have 3 Marans and 1 Barred Rock.
I picked the Marans based on coloring hoping for pullets and funny enough the darkest one with the best head spot -the one I thought would be a girl for sure is turning out to...
I have a LOT of pets. Compared to my other pets the chickens might actually be the only useful ones.
But I've never gotten so much negative response to any pet.
I had no idea there were so many chicken hating people out there.
There's people that are just suffering from some kind of chicken...
Are there different kinds of leg ring things (to identify the different chickens by)?
How do you put them on? When do you put them on (certain age or will they always fit on)?
I have 3 Marans and a BR. When they were tiny they were easy to keep apart but now they are looking more and more alike...
You know how chicks lay down to sleep with their neck stretched out and they look so content and cute! Do grown chickens still sleep like that? I guess I've just never watched chickens sleep...
I have a lot of flies. We have horses and lots of manure or at least I am using that as my excuse for having so many flies around.
My toddler and I like to swat them and feed them to the chicks who love them.
I am pretty sure all of these flies are home bred chemical free (organic!) flies.
The...
I have 6 chicks. I just want them to be pet chickens.
I've been handling them all each day but by now I clearly have favorites.
Is it okay to just not handle the chicks that don't enjoy being held as much? Or will they turn into wild and crazy chickens when they are adults? In other words is...
We live in a nice rural subdivision. Everybody has several acres so it's not too bad and we get to have horses, goats, etc.
I've always wanted chickens though and I found a loophole in the deed restrictions that allows us to have chickens if we are in 4H.
So of course I immediately sent in my...
that often you start out thinking something is ugly and once you really see it you suddenly think it's really cute and beautiful?
I have to admit every time I saw a Silkie or Showgirl thread/picture I thought ; wow, what a weird looking chicken. I just could not get used to a chicken like that...
I've been trying to take the paper liner away and switch the chicks over to shavings but as soon as I take the paper cover out (it's currently covering up a layer of shavings) they peck at the shavings.
Not sure how much they are eating them but lots of scratching around and pecking at it.
Does...
I received my EE and BR chicks at the same time (hatched same day). According to Meyer's catalog the BR should grow slightly bigger than the EEs.
Then I also got a few Cuckoo Maran chicks that were just a few days older.
The EEs are growing. The Cuckoo Marans are REALLY growing but I know they...
