We got our first egg from our almost 20 week old White Leghorn Snowball. She is so sweet and not flighty at all. Our most scared/flighty chicks are the Partridge and White Cochins! Go figure. The small white egg had a small streak of blood on it. Is that normal? I looked at her behind and...
My 8 almost 15week olds are doing well with the 4 adults hens. They are scared to death of them, but doing well. I have a small coop in the run for the chicks. The run is divided by chicken wire, and every afternoon we have been doing integration sesssions(monitored). So now I am leaving the...
My chicks are almost 9 weeks old, large breeds, and fully feathered (except for the runt). Can they be in the covered Chick n Hutch overnight. The temp here today is 71 for high, high 40's for a low tonight. I just need some reassurance from some nothern chick people that they will be ok...
Situation: I have 4 adult hens and eight almost 2 month old chicks. I have gotten some strong suggestions to keep them separate until the chicks are close to 16 weeks, or at least as big as my hens. Right now I have them segregated in an area under my droppings board, but they are quickly...
I bought chick grit(tiny small granite sand). My chicks are 5 weeks old. Should I keep sprinkling it on their food as I have been for weeks, or can I now leave it out for them free choice?
My DH took my idea and made it so again! Love him. This is the area for our 8 babies (5 weeks old on Monday Aug 2). It is the area under the droppings board. I have a flat panel heater in the coop and heated it to 75 ish last night. The coop only dropped to 70 with all the insulation in...
I have eight three week old chicks. 2 are Cochins, one partridge, the other white. My question is the Partridge is TINY (3 ozs) vs the white which is 6 ozs(along with most of the other chicks). Is the Partridge an accidental Bantam? How would I know? She is so loud, always peeping, where...
I think my double Rubbermaid tub is getting too small for my 8 three week old chicks. They are making mayhem and flying into each other everywhere. So I have an idea to make a "brooder" area within our coop. Here is the picture of the space I want to use:
Under the droppings board(after I...
This is my first time with chicks. They will be 3 weeks on Monday. The two cochins are smaller and less feathered than the other breeds(Austrolorp, Jersey Giant, Leghorn, Barred Rock, Red Star, Speckled Sussex) The other girls weigh close to 6 oz. and are very feathered and flying a little...
My brooder lamp came with stickers on it. I did think briefly that the stickers were very close to the lamp, but then forgot to remove them. When I came down this morning there was this terrible smell of somthing burning. Those stickers were BLACK and smoldering. I am an IDIOT! Why did I...
Talked to MPC. They did have to short me 2 chicks (Easter Egger and Buff Orp.) but he said I might not have gotten my Austrolorp either. Is there any definitive way to tell the Austrolorp from the Barred Rock or the Jersey Giant to see which ones I recieved? Thanks.

Can I just take out my 8 babies, put them into another box, quickly clean up their mess, then pop them back in? They have made quite a mess of the paper towels in the few hours they have been in there. Can't wait to see the mess in the morning!
I am missing 2 chicks. I ordered 10 different breeds, but did put that would accept substitutions. Anyone know what the deal is??? I emailed them but no answer yet.
So how does that "chick math" work? If I ordered 10, but was shorted 2, does that mean I should order 6 more?
Is there a rule as to how many inches the heat lamp should be above the chicks to keep them at 95 degrees? It is a 250 watt red bulb. I have had grown chickens, but this is the first time with new baby chicks!
I have tried baths with hydrogen peroxide. Her pecks wounds and the feather pulls are healing great. She is eating, laying and drinking well and tolerating the isolation from the other birds great. But her healing backside is caked in poo. Some of it comes off every day with her sitz bath in...
I have antibiotics for my sick chicken. How do I go about giving her a pill. The vet said let her peck it out of my hand, but she peck the grain but not the pill? Smart chicken, dumb owner. I am stuck.
My favorite Hyline hen Petunia has a terrible looking backside. I think she may have laid a no shell egg and the other three girls picked her bum incessantly. There was blood everywhere and they kept chasing her around and wouldn't stop. Now she needs a bath, but should I try to put on some...
It is so hard to tell a non pet chicken owning person that we had to euthanize one of our five gilrs last night. I can't stop crying and it is mother's day. I am supposed to be happy and I am just so sad. She kept getting worse and we took her to the vet. He gave us some antibiotics to try...
The girls had worms, so we did Wazine 1st. Then 10 days later (last night), we did 5 drops pour on Ivermectin. Today they are all shaking their heads? Any ideas?
Thanks.
