I went out to the coop tonight in order to shoot this video- all of my girls and guys were in their sleeping coop, which allowed me to pick the chickens up better. I forgot a few minor details though; roosters will have longer legs and their combs will be a lot redder than the hen's.
I have had hens who are find for many months, heck even years, and then they will simply die without me knowing they were ill. I now have a Buff Brahma separating herself from the group, she was eating and drinking fine a week ago but now her hunger has been waning. Is this a sign of internal...
A bard rock rooster and an Easter Egger pullet will result in a beautiful silvery/grey chick. They are a 1/3 pure-breed so they cannot be shown in legit bird shows, and they have a low mortality rate (or a high one... basically they will sometimes die off really easily).
A Buff Orpington...
Hookbeak is my one and a half month chicken and she has a problem, a hooked beak. I was wondering if it will hinder her in any way and what I could do to help her. She drinks fine, but getting food can be hard for her because her beak is curved at about half an inch or less past her lower jaw...
I had a chick who was really big in size (I'm unsure about the sex). It wasn't able to stand, and it's belly was really large. Today I noticed that the vent was leaking clear and yellow liquid, and the vent kept pulsing because the baby was trying to get the liquid out. The breathing of the...
So I've had hens of all ages and one chick (three weeks old to be exact) to fall over dead for no reason. One day they are fine in the morning and usually in the afternoon/evening I find them dead (or a family member does). They show no signs of infestation/trouble and no injuries of any kind...
I have a rooster and a few other hens that have purpled combs (near the back of the comb itself). It had been very hot here until yesterday because it cooled off and rained. What used to be 100 degrees F. and up is now as low as 80 degrees F. I was wondering if heat or cold messes with combs or...
I had to place all of my chicks in a box because they keep falling out of the nesting boxes outside. Right now (as I type) there is a chick pulling on its wing... like tugging on it. Could it just be a sign of being crowded or do I need to worry about something else? She/he is getting it's...
I need to know if my tired chick who hatched today is something to worry about. She is a mixed breed and drinks fine but refuses to touch the food. My other chick, another mutt, digs right in and eats as much as she wants. I was wondering if it's normal for a chick to be sleepy after hatching...
So I have this (almost) 7 month old black sex-link chicken and I want to show her at the fair. Is she a breed that can be shown because I am new to this and it's my first time at fairs. She is healthy and her feather are incredibly shiny. Also, can I show Buff orpingtons as well? I want to show...
Ok, I know there are people with picking problems and might be new to it. I will help with a few tips and tricks to help your birds gain their beautiful feathers back. I will add some more reasons and cures when I think of them. If you have any yourself you can tell me and I will gladly post...
NEW PART OF MY POST! I just went and candled some eggs. So far I have about five healthy chicks in their first cycle of their embryonic stage! I can't be more proud of my hens and rooster!
So I plan to hatch some eggs naturally, with a broody Bard Rock as their mama, I am aware there are a...
My rooster will go up behind a hen and scratch a foot while one of his wings are down (feather spread out). Not only that, but while he scratches his foot he will turn towards her and coo. I don't know if this is mating behavior, but I have a feeling that it is. This is the first year I've had a...
I've been taking care of chickens since 2011. I had some dead birds from my first, second, and third flock, as I was an amateur (I still consider myself to be one). Plenty had died from skunk attacks since my coop had holes in them that I couldn't see, and others have died from being either...
