I was wondering if anyone tried to put chicks 4-5 days old under broody hen other than day'olds? Have a broody and haven't made it to the feed store, they are 4 days old today...the next shipment comes in next week, not sure if she'll still be broody then, she's been sitting about 2 weeks already.
I have a mixed flock of hens who are just about at the 1-year age. One of my RIR's suddenly has become quite aggressive, mounting the other hens and pecking their necks. I am at the point where I may have to cull her just to have sanity back in the flock. Any suggestions? I have tried...
i got my order from McMurray today (first time ordering from them) . One chick was DOA and much tinier than the silkie bantams, it had to be a buff rock, but way small. Another blue silkie died withing 1 hour, which I know happens. I have a 3 legged chicken in the mix, either a white leghorn or...
I noticed one of my 7 week old chicks sneezing; I watched it for a while and noticed it stumbling a bit; upon picking it up I noticed subq emphysema under the top part of the wing; it is drooling and acting sick. What is wrong? Should I put it down or can it recover?
I have a lot of powder in the feed bag, it also ends up piling up in the feeder so I have to dump the whole feeder out and reload. Can the chicks eat this (6 week olds) or is it too fine for them to eat?
At 3 weeks some of my cornish X have started making a twittering sound and at 4 weeks none of them are chirping but are making more "grown up" chicken sounds.
But I am interested at what the purring or twittering sound is.
Sometimes, one will make a loud clucking and all will be still and silent...
I just got back from an open house held by Griffith Hatchery in Fulton, MO. I was very surprised at the lack of biosecurity for the chicks, there were people milling about the various tubs of few day-old to few-week old chicks, all out in the open, practically no heat source for the little...
Couldn't do a search, it overloaded the system!
We have 5 mature hens now with 15 2 week old cornish, soon to be butchered in a few weeks, 12 2 week old varying pullets.
Just wondering about overall numbers. I'm afraid I've become a chicken hoarder.
A co-worker was commenting on the arsenic derivitive placed in commercial chick feed, I could not find the info on the Purina Mills website about what is in the "medicated" part of the feed (it only lists the nutritional content).
Anyone know what they put in it? I may have to call the company...
I hope this is the proper place to post this; I was wondering how often a hatchery messes up the order? I suspect I did not get the birds I ordered, but this is only my 3rd time ordering; I have never used Estes before, had good luck with cackle in the past.
Is this a rare occurance?
Here is the little guy who passed on last night for unexplained reasons. It was a day-old chick. I want to replace it, but I don't know what breed it is. It is either a partridge rock, RIR, red sex link, or speckled sussex. It is identical to another chick that survives but I did not order 2...
I ordered a variety of chicks and can't figure out who's who. The chick who expired will be posted on another entry to be identified. I think I know who the black marans are, and of coarse the cornish x's, and salmon faverolle (fuzzy feet) but as for the others....
I am particularly interested...
Received 25 day-old chicks this am; they have been running around their "brooder" all day; a few hours ago my daughter noticed one lying down with 3 or 4 cornish X chicks standing over it; it is laying on its tummy with one leg sprawled out, eyes closed. It mover sometimes but not much. We've...
We put it in a separate box with its own heat, etc...is this what should be done? He was pecking at the other chick's feet and pulling at the feet like it was trying to eat them! Got them all this morning, day old.
I was wondering, since it takes 3-5 months to molt (so the web says)
if your hens are not pets, do you keep them or eat them when this happens? Does their laying really slow down after they resume laying?
Thanks
Hello all, I am excited to join this group of experts as we expand our flock!
We started out last spring with 10 cornish X for eating, 5 white leghorns, and 1 RIR. Over the summer all white leghorns were taken (from an enclosed run) one by one during the day (killed in place and partially...
