    My beautiful quail hens

I have a small flock of 7 quail this year that I hatched like I do each spring. I usually give my quail away in the fall so I don't have to feed/water in the winter. I am considering keeping this flock to hatch their eggs in the spring though. I don't know what colors to call afew of them...

    Coturnix that lay rotten eggs?

OK, a little background -I hatched eggs myself and at exactly 6 weeks, I got 3 eggs. 2 had been pecked open and one literally exploded in my hand. Rotten, stinky rotten and looked like puss. I assumed that I had missed them somehow and they rotted from the heat. That very night, a dog broke...

    Injured quail

I have an 8'x8' pen in my back yard that I have my current 6 quail in (5 hens, 1 rooster). Yesterday, we had a red-tailed hawk terrorizing them. I don't know for how long as I was in town. When I went out there after the hawk flew away, all 6 of them had injuries on their faces right above...

    Only ONE hatched

I bought some eggs, they were shipped and many arrived damaged. I set as many as I thought were undamaged and crossed my fingers. So, on day 19 (was about to toss them all), ONE chick hatched. He's 24 hours old now and seems to be fine, other than peeping incessantly. I am not sure what...

    quail coloring

I recently hatched a batch of coturnix - from a batch of eggs that were just labeled as a 'variety'. I got mostly browns, a few golden, then one mostly white. The white has one nickle sized brown spot on the back of it's head. Since it has some coloring, would it be considered a white (A&M?)...

    easy egg turner

So, I just had a hatch of coturnix quail. When I set the eggs, I brainstormed to figure out a system to turn the eggs easily without opening the incubator. I just have a cheapo little giant foam incubator. What I did was make a couple wire 'corrals' to contain the eggs and tipped the...

coturnix roo's - do they not crow in the winter?

I have 1 tux roo, 2 tux hens, 2 brown hens and a golden hen all together in one pen. I culled down to just the 6 for the winter.... I have not heard my tux roo crow in a couple months though - since around the time the hens stopped laying. Do they not crow in the winter? They all have that...

I am out of feed - I already went to town today and was back before the feed store opened. I am not going to town again until tomorrow - and they are hungry today What can I make them in the kitchen to tide them over until tomorrow? I have some buns in the freezer I could thaw out and toast...

don't count your chickens before they are hatched

going by this motto, I did not pick up any chick starter.... I have some gamebird startena for my quail - is this acceptable? Or do I need to pick up chick starter on my way to get my son from school this afternoon? I have 5 welsummer chicks hatched in the incubator so far, with a couple...

newly hatched welsummer chick with yolk sac still attached

I have not opened my incubator for 3 days - and the chicks are hatching this morning. Three are hatched now and 2 pipped.... one of the new hatchlings still has the yolk sac attached - will it be OK? It is reddish looking and about the size of a nickle and still attached and dragging behind...

how do I know how far along the eggs are?

I found my 'missing' welsummer hen with a clutch of 13 eggs - which are now in the incubator. She was 'missing' for approx 2 weeks, but I really didn't keep track real close - how do I know when the eggs are due so I can stop turning them at the right time?

    how do I find a chicken's hiding spot? semi-emergency

any ideas greatly appreciated. My welsummer hen is hiding a nest somewhere. I had not seen her for 2 weeks or so, and then today I saw her for a short time, then she went back into hiding. I know she's got a nest in the blackberries somewhere, but how to find it?! We have 1 1/2 acres, half...

wire floor for newly hatched chicks?

I have a solid bottom brooder, but I would prefer to use a wire bottom brooder if I could (it has 1/2''x1/2'' wire). So much easier to keep clean. Could I use this for newly hatched welsummer chicks? (they aren't hatched yet, just thinking ahead).

    a very tiny quail egg

I got an egg the other day in my quail pen - and it's only 1/4 of the size of a regular quail egg! Smaller than a marble! So cute and tiny, I don't know what to do with it! Thinking of something crafty I can do with it!

what type of chickens don't fly?

Are silkie's the only non-flying chickens? I'm looking for something that will stay in my fenced area and won't fly out. I lost one of my Welsummer hens recently when she flew out and got caught on the gate and hung herself between the slats of the gate I have one Welsummer roo and one...
