I had to put down my son's favorite chicken today. She was prolapsed and egg bound. The egg was on one side of her hanging out (inside tissue) and the hole where the egg comes out was on the other side hanging out. She was bleeding and the egg inside was broken. She seemed to be suffering...
Oh. My. Goodness. I just made scrambled eggs with 4 little eggs we just got. Mercie. So good. Will they always taste this good or will the taste change when the eggs start to get bigger? I HATED store bought eggs. NEVER ate them, just baked with them. I thought I'd bite the bullet and try...
Hi all! I got my first 2 eggs today! Not sure from who yet. lol. My question is I have 12 girls and I was wondering how many nest boxes I need. They are 17 1/2 weeks. I wasn't ready so they laid on the roost board and floor. I have two nest boxes I just went and put out there. How many...
I think this question got lost in my other post.
My chicks are about 6 weeks old. Seem to be pretty much feathered out. There are 16 of them and we put them in the coop today. They are happy as can be. My question is do they need a heat light at night still? It is going to be 48 to 50...
My chicks are about 6 weeks old. They are headed out to the coop today. Will they need a heat lamp when the temp is 60 degrees? I plan on having it on at night, but when do I stop that? Thanks for all your help! It has been very helpful. lol
Hello. Do I still keep their feeder full at all times? Or do I just fill it twice a day? I filled it this morning (its one with 14 holes, 7 on each side) and they ate it all already (it's noon) I filled it back up. Is that ok or should I not fill it up again til night? I have 16 4 week olds.
do both male and female have a tiny bump on the back of their legs down by their feet? Or is it just roos? Mine are a little over 2 weeks and I see some on some and I don't really see it on the ones that I got out of the pullet bin.
Do they have green legs? I have some chicks that people here thought were Jersey White Giants. They 2 out of 4 have green legs with orange feet. The other 2 have orangish legs.
I wanted to know if someone could post a pic of their BO teenagers. I think I might have some, but not sure. At what age do their legs get whiter. Right now their orangish. Thanks!
Can I feed them when I get up around 8am? I also feed them when I go to bed around 9 pm. Is this ok? Are these times ok for them when they go to the coop also?
Another question--after they start laying late summer, how often do I collect eggs? Thanks!
I got these at Rural King. They are from Cackle Hatchery. There a mystery to me. I do know that I got black sex links and barred rocks. But these aren't them.
The greyish ones with white wings have greyish orange legs.
This one has a darker grey back.
This one is lighter grey in...
I have some chicks (16) and there are some yellow/orange ones in there that I think are RIR. A couple of them fly through the brooder and land on/push over some others. Sometimes the barred rocks will be on the feeder trough and the yellow one (s) will do this. Is that normal? Thanks!
I have some Amish friends that said they buy hens every year because they only lay for a year. I didn't know that. They raise them for a year and after that they butcher them and get new ones. I really didn't want to do that. I'd rather keep my hens for a long time. I don't plan on eating...
I got it on Monday. It has really big feet and is yellow. It is not like the rest. He is having labored breathing and his belly feels like a balloon. He was fine yesterday. He doesn't have any butt crust or anything. What should I do with it?
How often do you handle the chicks?
When can you know if you got girls or boys from your straight run?
Thanks! We have 17 chicks and we are so excited! Here are some of them. The only ones I know for sure are the barred rocks.
