Day 23. I had 26 successfully hatched-all pipped on the 21st or early on the 22nd day. One pipped and didn't make it, and there are about 6 eggs that didn't hatch. one has faint peeping, we are at the end of day 23.. Other than watch it, is there anything that should be done? The incubator...
The subject line says it all, but I'm really concerned! I know instructions say not to adjust anything for 24 hours, but we are at the 22 hour mark and my very sensitive thermometer (which held steady temps at 99.9-100.7 for a week prior to adding eggs) is reading 94 at the level of the eggs...
We hatched out nine last year and ended up with only one roo, which my kids loved, and we recently lost him. I would like at the very least a big roo, or an assortment of young BJGs to raise.
He was about 2 years old, and I found him laying in the back of the chicken tractor, with his favorite hen standing guard next to his body
My kids are so sad. Normally we try to have the tractors in the shade on hot days, but today it was in the sun (although covered & completely...
Please pardon my ignorance... our temperature normally only dips below freezing once or twice a year, and oddly enough, it will be freezing for 4-5 nights in a row this week.
We have had awfully wet weather for a couple weeks; the entire yard is like a big muddy sponge, and several of my hens...
I have two issues open for suggestions! I have two small flocks in separate tractors I would like to combine, basically adding new hens to a pen with a roo & a few hens. The roo and the hens are very mild mannered, and have accepted a hen before, however that pen is also home to two guineas...
For two weeks we've gotten one or two tiny eggs every day from our Salmon Faverolles. I have 4 pullets that are 5 months & 1 week old, and two have very red combs.
They are in with 2 BR hens who are regular layers, but I'm pretty sure the little eggs are from the faverolles, because they 1)...
on the higher perches... UGG! Dirty nestbox material every day, and that is where my older hens lay. How can I teach them that nest boxes are not for their sleeping pleasure?
I have the luck to get 6 out of 7 cockerels?
I have some pictures I can upload and post later, but I have 7 EE chicks. 5 are different stripe/partridge type pattern colors with pea combs, and two are a dark black with brown barring and single comb. All of the pea combs are starting to show...
I know normally advice would have been not to try to hatch double-yolkers, but I was sent three out of a dozen in eggs I ordered, so I wanted to chance it instead of tossing the possibly viable eggs.
2 don't appear to be developing, but one definitely is, and actually looks like there might be...
I'm so sad, I only had 2 silkie eggs developing, and when they both pipped I was so hopeful. One chipped a good sized pip, I could see the beak breathing. It got rolled into half an eggshell that had already hatched, and when I took the other chicks out today and rolled it apart, it was dead...
We were given a flock of laying hens in May by a BYCer who had to get rid of them because of zoning. He said they were coming out of a molt, but because they were focusing so much energy on laying they were having a hard time growing their feathers back. They are laying almost daily.
They are...
You may have noticed my posts in the chick forum, my hatchery ordered chicks are lost in the mail, and all arrived dead this morning, so I'm hoping to replace them with eggs instead of risking live shipment again.
I just won an auction for some BCM eggs that will ship Tuesday, does anyone else...
My chicks shipped from Cackle on Wednesday. I was told they were being shipped "2 day arrival" and assumed that meant something like Express, but they actually went Priority mail. They aren't here and won't possibly be delivered until Monday.
I'm anticipating a box of dead babies, but is...
out of our chicken tractor. Once out, it is scared to go back in. It hesitates, and cries for the others, and peeks through the door at the scary dilemma of the open space in the doorway, finally freaking out and flying through.
I knew they weren't the brightest, but this particular one is...
I'm sorely bummed. Back in May I ordered and the est. ship date was July 1. Mine shipped on the 1st, at the time I didn't think about the 4th being a holiday.
I called back -weeks prior to July 1- asking if I needed to upgrade to Express mail. The person on the phone told me that they aren't...
I hatched 2 welsummer chicks this week from very nice dark eggs-one almost like a maran egg and one that was lighter with very dark speckles. The chicks are chipmunk colored with very vivid stripes, one has yellow legs, one has more greenish legs. They both have slight leg feathering (not...
It seems that the eyelid slits are too small and too high. I can (gently) tug on them and get a small opening in each, so they aren't sealed shut, but the chick cannot seem to open them on their own, and the opening doesn't seem large enough for the entire eye to be open. Is this something...
I had checked my thermometer/gauge before starting and it correctly showed 75% in the salt/water ziploc test...
With it that high is it dangerous to the chicks? Some that hatched this morning still aren't looking very fluffy.
