    Greenhouse coverings, I need help

I have decided to start gardening again and am building raised beds to keep the ducks out :) I found a metal hoop greenhouse out in a junk pile!! It's 12' wide at the base and I'll probably do 20' long for now. But I don't know what to cover it with. I've researched a lot but still can't decide...

Female leave nest before all eggs are hatched

I have a Muscovy that hid a nest under a large pine tree and I didn't find it for a while. They started hatching yesterday, first baby out in early morning. A couple more eggs were hatching, I don't know how many are now. I can only get a glimpse of her and see some eggs that haven't started...

Got 2 Muscovies, WH, and Runners! PICS

I picked up a pair of Muscovies on Tuesday. First ones I've ever had. I really like them, they are very nice and gentle. I can pet them or pick them up if needed. They're across the fence from my other birds, and the geese have been squawking at them and carrying on trying to be aggressive. The...

    Dark Skin Color on birds

I'm trying to find some Muscovies. I want some for us, but will sell (locally) whatever grown hatchlings we don't eat. I'm assuming darker birds will have darker skin (like with other birds). Do buyers care? Do any of you have problems selling darker skinned birds over white ones?

    Another muscovy question.... Skin color???

Does color matter for a meat bird? I know a lot of people like a white carcass. I want Muscovies, and will sell whatever birds we don't eat. So should I get white birds? Or do people buying Muscovies really care about color of skin? I'm assuming here that a brown/ dark colored bird will have...

Can you shoot ducks? Or best to cut off head?

Do any of you shoot your birds when you're ready to process them? If so, do you then hang them to bleed out? I need to process my first ducks, and have read up on it but still not sure of the best way to actually kill them. Meaning, most humane (quick also) and also easiest on me! Just curious......

Best meat duck? I can't decide... Muscovy Questions

I've been looking for Silver Appleyards for months and just won't be able to find any until next year. I am ordering a couple runners from Metzers, and was thinking of getting a few Welsh Harlequins. I like that they lay a lot of eggs, I need more layers. But I will also be raising a batch or...

    Anyone ordered from duckmarket.com?

Just came across their website and was wondering if anyone has used them. They have quite a few breeds.

Anyone sell duck manure as fertilizer??

I live in a very uppity, rich area, full of environmentalists and just people trying to be more sustainable and such. Nothing wrong with that... I'm just giving you an idea of the area I live in. I try to be more self sustainable as well. I had one of these people ask a friend how much I charged...

Duck egg hatching problem?- please read! PICS

I took this duck egg from the mother maybe 4 days ago as it was spider webbed cracked around half the egg and I knew it would die. I sealed it with wax and a little nail polish and it's been doing great. The temp has fluctuated in my homemade incubator, just during a couple nights. I've been up...

Broody goose, no eggs hatched. Help!

I have a broody goose and duck. Two baby geese were killed soon after hatching by the other broody goose (she's now banned from the pen). A rotten egg broke and killed the rest of the eggs right before hatching. I've always had ducks that would remove bad eggs themselves, so I didn't candle them...

Terrible luck with eggs this year- one in the bator now! Question....

Had a full nest of goose eggs doing well-I had just candled a few. In the past I've raised lots of ducks and they always push out the bad eggs. I didn't think I needed to candle and remove them from the geese either. Two babies hatched, and I found them dead. The other sitting goose had killed...

Incubating duck eggs- a few questions

I am making an incubator as I can't afford a really nice one and the cheaper ones don't seem that reliable. I've researched a LOT on here and everywhere else, but still have a few questions. I'm using a styrofoam cooler for this. How much ventilation is required for which periods during...

Fertile eggs or not? Male not doing his job

I have ducks, 3 of which will be butchered very soon. Then I'll just have a male and female. I also have 2 female Africans, and one male African. They started laying early, like March. And the male was breeding one female and chasing away the other. After a while the male ducks started trying to...

Anyone in Idaho need some male Rouens?

I am pretty sure I have 4 males, and one female. Not quite what I wanted. If anyone is close I'd love to trade.

    Pictures- pool, filter/pump, duck pen

SportTees- here's a few pictures for you. It's very simple and not very attractive, but it will do for now. I would love to get a real pond liner for them at some point. The water is very dirty right now, but I've only had it going for about a week or more. I've read it can take 4-8 weeks for...

    My Africans are wimps

I've never had geese before, so I got 3 africans hoping they'd provide some protection for the ducks. Just from smaller animals and small dogs, or at least bluff them away. They are only about 6 weeks old, but they are wimps. One will snake his head around and act tough, but he's a wimp too...

    Building a pond?

The pond I used to have was always so dirty, looking for ideas on making a new one. I have an excavator and a bobcat, so I can dig anything. But do I really need to be able to drain it? Or will something bigger work with goldfish or something else to keep it cleaner? Our ground is also rockier...

How to keep geese from biting ducks?

I'm new here, hello! I have 3 baby African geese, and 5 baby Rouen ducks. I've raised lots of ducks before, but never any geese. They are about 2 weeks old. Recently 2 of the geese have been picking on the ducks. Once in a while they will bite them or chase them around. The other goose is well...
