This morning when cleaning the poop tray I noticed some very watery poop, with blood in it. At least 2 spots. When I let the chickens out to free range for a little while I noticed the rooster's comb and wattles were black. He was out less than a minute and sat down rather than foraging. His...
These chicks hatched on January 1st. I'm sure I have 2 cockerels and one hen. But the one with the pea comb is confusing me. Is it a hen or a roo? They come from Auracuana hens and a Maran rooster.
The one near the front on the left side.
Another shot of the pea comb, bird on the bottom...
My EE/Maran cross chicks are 8 and 9 days old today. They are growing like weeds. All are eating and drinking good and are active (knock on wood). This is my first time with chicks. Any advice on things I should be doing? I've read the Learning Center articles about raising baby chicks but...
3 of my 4 eggs hatched yesterday (Yay!!!!). All the chicks are fluffy and moving around great today, still in the incubator. The final egg has a pip but is progressing much slower than the previous hatchings. The paper towel I put on the bottom of the incubator is getting pretty gross...
We have 4 eggs in a Brinsea mini that are due to hatch this weekend so we're hoping for the best and getting things ready.
I know I need a chick feeder and waterer, plus the food, but what other things should I have on hand for them? Special antibiotics? Food additives? ets.
We will be...
I'm not sure where to start looking. I'm new to the whole raising chickens thing. We noticed today that one of our BO hens was standing apart from the others and all fluffed up. I picked her up and her crop is soft and spongy. I couldn't feel any food in it but we added some scratch to the...
My husband come home from his cousins with these 2 little banty hens. They are about the size of pigeons right now. I was told 8-12 weeks old. Any idea of breed mix on these? When I first saw them I thought he had brought me some pigeons.
I have 4 BO hens. They are around 38 weeks (an estimate, I was told they hatched in February). One hen started laying at 34 weeks and has been consistent ever since. Not a thing from the other 3. One has gotten large, just as big as the layer, and her comb is nice and red and growing. It's...
Our BO has started laying (Finally!) The first egg she laid on the floor of the coop. The 2nd was in the nest box. Hubby said he was told to leave the egg in the nest box and it would encourage her to keep laying there. I'm afraid to leave it too long because I don't want to encourage egg...
Hi Everyone, I keep getting emails from BYC saying I need to post something so I figured I'd start with introducing myself. My husband and I recently picked up 4 buff orpingtons from his cousin. According to her we should be getting our first eggs any day now. I'm trying to keep my obsession...
