Weak leg 2 day old chick

So I've done a lot of research on this site and I'm still stumped as to what is going on with my little chick. Her left leg seems weak and she falls over on to that side and can't right herself. It doesn't seem to be slipped tendon, I felt the joint and didn't feel anything out of place. It...

Broody in favorite nest box- now none are laying

My silkie has been broody for a week or so now and I have not gotten eggs from any of my chickens but one. My 5 chickens use the same nesting box, which is what my silkie is sitting in. Would this cause the others to stop laying? I have looked in their covered run and in the coop all over and...

    Cabinet incubator design help

Decided to build a cabinet incubator this weekend. I have leftover cabinets after we recently put in a dishwasher. Pretty excited! Here is the link I'm going off of for my design. I won't have plexiglass in the front, but will put a plexiglass window on one of the sides...

These breeds are a bit of a mystery!

I received these as part of a rare breed assortment and I'm having trouble identifying these two. 1. Phoenix? Red Jungle Fowl? She has pink legs so I know she's not a leghorn and seems too light to be a speckled Sussex. She's a small chick but not a bantam. 2. Complete mystery to me!

Advice before next hatch with Janoel 24

My last hatch with this incubator about 5 eggs pipped the wrong end and I haven't had this happen before. This incubator seems to very very slightly move the eggs and I'm wondering if that's the problem. Air cells were all good through the hatch, they were shipped eggs too. Is there a way I can...

    In need of guidance

Hi all I'm looking to get into breeding what are not so common in my area. The breeds I'm considering are dorkings, basque, faverolles, buckeyes. Faverolles have been on my list for some time. Basque I'm considering due to their attributes and friendliness. I'm looking for quiet birds that...

Scots dumpy, where to find other than Sandhill?

I'm looking for scots dumpy eggs or chicks for the spring. Sandhill preservation is already sold out for 2016! I guess I didn't plan soon enough. Does anyone know of breeders of scots dumpy chickens or another place I could purchase them? Thanks all :)

A few eggs pipped at wrong end!

I have 3 eggs that have externally pipped the wrong end of the shell. One I can see its beak and the other two just pipped in the last hour. I've read about assisted hatching and I've helped chicks before with success. I'm worried about opening the bator when I have some many pips, humidity is...

Eggs developing on one side only?

I am using my Janoel 24 incubator for the first time and it has an automatic turning function. I candled on day 7 and it seems that all eggs are developing on one side? In the past I used a automatic turner with my little giant and the eggs didn't develop like this. I turned them all on the...

    New to having broodies

Hi all, so my two serama hens have decided to go broody and are sharing a nest box. I have some eggs due to hatch today or tomorrow and I've read I can give some chicks to broody hens at night to raise. What would you suggest? Should I try these new chicks or some fertile eggs?

    Incubator troubleshooting

Hi all, I bought at LG 9300 with auto turner...I know not the easiest to use for a first timer. I added in a computer fan to mine. I had an 80% hatch rate with my first time (also only time) incubating. My incubator did not hold humidity well in lockdown and it leaked. Has anyone had this...

Day 7 candling - how do these look?

This is my first day candling my easter egger and olive egger eggs. There are a few that I can't figure out if they are viable or not. I've looking at all of the threads on the learning center and I can't quite tell if these eggs are okay. Nothing smells and the blue and brown eggs are just...

Looking to purchase - any signs a particular one may be a pullet?

I found these silkies on craigslist and I'm going to see them in person today. The darker one is a lavender/partridge cross and the two in the back are lavender. The pictures aren't the best, but if you have any tips of what I need to look for it would be so helpful!

How long to keep injured chick separate from others?

Three days ago my dog got into the coop and as a result one of my 5 week old chicks was scalped on her right side. I can see the skull and I've been irrigating the wound, using Neosporin and blu kote once. She is in a dog crate inside the coop with the others. When can I let her out with the...

Injured chicken - part of scalp missing

One of my dogs busted into the coop last night and his nail took a piece of the chicks scalp. I feel horrible, but I immediately got her inside and got on here to see what I should do. So, I am going this morning to get Blu-Kote. I cleansed the wound with salt water and put some Neosporin on the...
