Following up on the post by NAMBLE. I have 9 RIR chicks that are 6 weeks old. Two of them have very prominent combs and are larger than their siblings. They are also a little more agressive than the others. Is this a good sign their cockerals? Any help is appreciated.
thanks
My RIR rooster is 7 months old and seems to be healthy. In the last two or three days I've noticed a change in the coloration of his legs. He is starting to get a reddish/orange tint on the lower part of his legs from about where the spurs start down to the area between the toes. His legs are...
My RIR hens have been laying for 4 or 5 weeks now with no problem. I have had only three jelly eggs with 12 hens and figured all was going well. One day last week I got two eggs on the coop floor instead of in the nest boxes. I didn't think much about it at the time but for the past two days...
This post is for you folks around the Chapel Hill, N.C. area that are using Purina Layena for your birds. I went to Piedmont Feed Center on Hwy 54 West of Chapel Hill this a.m. and found out they had reduced their feed costs to compete with the TSC's in the area. TSC is carrying Purina Layena...
I have just finished my first hands on treatment for lice /mites. I used a product from Adams called tick, flea and lice treatment for puppies. It's all I could find made by Adams at Wal-Mart, but it did have pyrethrin. Will it be effective? I sprayed under each wing, near the vent, and...
Although I haven't seen obvious signs of lice or mites on my RIR's I'd like to do a preemptive strike on the critters. My question is whether or not to use the tried and true way of dusting each bird with poultry dust after they've gone to the roost or using the Frontline spray I've seen...
My RIR hens are just starting to lay. I got an egg this morning that had some blood on the outside of the shell. Otherwise it was a nice medium/large egg with a good shell. The egg may have come from a first timer. Is the blood on the shell normal for new layers? Just need to know if this...
One of the ladies finally put me out of my misery and laid an honest to goodness egg! My wife told me all along that if I wanted anything from a female I needed to beg. Guess she was right all along
I finally convinced one of my hens to lay a real honest to goodness egg and can't fiure out how to get the picture on the forum. I've managed to upload it but can't get it attatched to my post. If this isn't the correct posting site please forgive me. I'm a computer challenged old man.
I spoke with the man I got my RIR's from the other day and in general conversation he told me he never gives his layers cracked corn as scratch because it slows down the egg production. He feeds only laying pellets to his laying hens. I give my hens (12 of them) a 12 ounce cup of cracked corn...
I understand the importance of supplemental electrolytes in the hot weather but want to know if it is necessary or advisable to continue them in the winter. I'm in N.C. and it really doesn't get cold here. Thanks for your advice
Is there a recommended size for nesting boxes? The plans I used to build my nest boxes may have been for smaller breed chickens and I have RIR pullets. The inside measurements for the boxes are 11 1/2 inches tall, 10 1/2 inches wide, and 11 1/2 inches deep and the tops are covered. Will these...
The local feed store has a generic product for most farm animals. It is an 8 ounce package of water soluable powder. The directions say to use 4 ounces for 55 gals. I use a 3 gal waterer for 15 birds. How would I mix this and keep it fresh for my birds. I'll assume it can be premixed and...
I have a flock of 17 week old RIR's and have discovered they love eating leaves from beech trees and leaves from a shrub I believe is named Illiagneus (guessing on the spelling). Around here (Chatham County N.C. )it's called hackberry. The hackberry also produces small berries in the summer...
