I have Silkies, they are too small to eat regular oyster shell, I set it out for them and they just ignore it. One of my girls has been laying soft eggs for a week. Even on the end, it's like the shell isn't even strong enough to develop, and she lays an "open egg" that has a small hole in the...

Will my chickens fall into my koi pond? I'm not sure what their sense of direction is and we have a 200 gallon koi pond that they haven't discovered yet. Should I put a little fence around it to prevent them from falling in?

So in a matter of just a few weeks, I have no grass left in my coop. Can I throw a few pieces of sod in there? It doesn't have any chemicals I need to worry about, does it?
SO Lowes has a dried bucket of around 1000 mealworms for about $6. Petco has fresh for $6 but there are only about 100. Economical the dried is cheaper, but do your chickens know the difference? Mine are obsessed with fresh, but I haven't tried the dried ones yet.
Do you guys do anything to "rain proof" the run? Mine is completely open. I'm guessing they will retreat to the coop when it rains, but who knows. Do you cover your run with a tarp or anything?
My itty bitties are two weeks old. I started the red heat lamp around 92 degrees, now it's about 82. The bedroom they are in is so hot and they avoid the lamp area like the plague. The temp outside is 83 today and the house is probaly around 80. It just seems so frickin hot. Can I turn the heat...
I have two week old chicks. I have no idea what sex they are. They are obviously sick of their brooder already because when I take them outside, they get super excited and jump, hop, and almost "challenge each other" like in a cock fight. Now they are only two weeks, are they just being silly...
Hi there, I bough a 72 unit Burpee seed start kit. my onions and peppers have been growing in it for two weeks. I want to transfer them into big pots for container gardening, when can I do that? When they're a month old? The peppers are only an inch high now and the onions are about 5 inches high.
My hatchlings are about 1-2 days old. I don't see any poop yet! Call me a nervous mom! They aren't drinking or eating yet either which I understand they are surviving off the yolk yet but I'm just scared. They seem very happy and try to itch their heads on one foot which cracks me up! So when...
I am using a 51 gallon rubbermaid tub as my brooder. It's about 2 feet high. Should I put a lid on the top made out of wire? They will be in my spare bedroom, so no threat of predators. Also, they are silkies so they can't fly anyway. But I don't want one to think he's "superman" and hop over...
Hi All,
Had a question regarding my Grand Eclectus Parrot whom I've raised since he was 12 weeks old. He is now seven, and a HUGE part of my family. I want to bring my 4 brooder silkies into my home and keep in my spare bedroom until they are old enough to go outside (about 4 weeks). My...
Hi All!
Long time member of BYC-but not many posts. Gearing up to build my coop this summer. I'd be interested in chatting with someone close to me that has some Banty chicks for sale-I have previously purchased some from Murray McMurray hatchery and was very pleased with their quality of...
Hi Ya'll! I'm new to the forum, I've been a chicken lover since I was two years old! I currently live on a 1/2 acre and there is a 40 acre horse pasture that seperates me from a fellow chicken lover. Every morning I hear their rooster and long for one of my own! So I've decided to try to modify...
