Getting our new chicks for this spring next week...
Just curious what everyone thinks is the best bedding for chicks and why?
We have used many different kinds in the past but I am curious to see what and why everyone else uses?
Thoughts on using sand? I know there is a risk that they eat too...
hi there, new to ducks.
I have 9 cayuga eggs in the incubator for my 2nd hatch of them...first hatch they pipped and hatched day 29...this 2nd hatch they have pipped and are rocking on day 21!!!
Has this happened before to anyone?? I'm almost wondering if there was a mistake with the breeder...
I have a hen that has now gone broody, and I have 4 little almost 1 week old baby chicks inside in a brooder...
I know of putting day olds or so under broody's with success, but I'm just wondering if anyone has done this with week olds or so?
I will note too, that this hen has never been...
Total beginner here...but chicken genetics are absolutely fascinating to me!
I have just started to do some reading up on it but to be honest i'm feeling quite lost...
How do you know what gene is dominant and which is not? or is it all one way...such as, I have read that the coppering gene is...
Hi, we have 2 6 week old chicks that hatched and i'' wondering if they are pullets or roos? I just can''t figure them out...im thinking pullets but i have no experience sexing this breed.
Thank you.
Hello everyone! Just for fun I thought I would share some pictures of our little baby chicks.
We have 12 in total, 4 BCM, 4 SFH, 2 WA, and 2 OE.
My guess so far (they are 4 weeks old now) is 1 rooster and 11 pullets. I know its still too early to tell, so I've been doing this since they hatched...
Hi all, we've got some baby chicks currently in a tote in our basement set at 90F.
We've built a brooder for them in our unheated shop outside. Set up with a heat lamp that was steady at 90F.
When i tried to transfer them to the brooder i checked after an hour or so and some of the chicks...
This is the first year we will be culling some of our chickens, we have some old girls we took over from a farmer who was already going to cull them but we thought we would take a few to ease us into chicken keeping.
They are now on the road to freezer camp...just wondering if there was anything...
Hi,
First time incubating and i have one chick who is having troubles walking. It had hatched with crooked toes on one foot so i made a "cast" for it and it seemed to have helped, but now its leg won't work properly for walking and appears swollen and red to me.
The other chicks were pecking...
Just curious, we'll be most likely adding a few new hens (2-3) to our flock either sometime this fall or next spring, depending on when the breed we want is available to buy (it'll be most likely ameraucana) .
On that note, we currently have a flock of 7 pullets and one cockerel...will the...
I've looked this up and didn't find any solution, so I'm hoping someone out there can help me figure / solve this one out.
We have 7 pullets and 1 rooster, there's a few that I think have started to lay, today I found the youngest one that we had trying to nest about. Now, granted, she did seem...
We have 8-9 week old chicks together, 7 pullets and one roo...
The other day we've started noticing that the roo will chase some of the pullets and try to mount them (one in particular when she's lying down).
Is this normal behaviour at this age? could they be older than we believed?...
First...
I have a few photos of some chicks I bought from a farmer who wasn't entirely sure what they were but thought some might be BCM as they had a few of those chickens but couldn't be confident on that...what do you all think?
This one here we named Amber.
We have about 6 older ladies and we've got 8 new chicks who are about 5-7 weeks old now probably (really not sure their exact ages but all but one pretty much are full feathered) 6 suspected pullets, 2 suspected roos.
Question being, we've recently discovered lice on our 6 ladies and are...
I was having issues with my girls not laying so much, or at least not really wanting to do so in the nest boxes.
I stole three golf balls from my hubby and put them in our two nesting boxes...it worked right away!
Now were getting our eggs consistently in the nest boxes
The funny thing too...
The other day i noticed some "boogery" substance coming out of our chicken pickles' nose...
Since then it is gone but i have noticed that she's been sneezy / coughing when i feed them their scratch treat for a little while now, and she eats mostly by grabbing something in her mouth and tilting...
Not really all that great of photos, but i noticed some goopey cream/grey stuffs coming out of pickles' nose this morning!
Never really seen it before now, but the last little while she'll cough or shake her head when she's eating...I just figured it was the way she ate? But today i noticed her...
Tonight we added the extension to our brooder as our chicks are getting bigger by the day! They love it, bouncing and flapping back and forth
Well, as we were watching them get accustomed to the added space, i noticed spots of red on some pine shavings here and there that they were going...
Hello Everyone,
Just wondering if it's ok that i put washed play sand in the brooder with my chicks who are between 3-6 weeks old...
I use this sand as part of a dust bath for the older chickens and I want the young ones to get used to it...the only thing is i noticed they would mostly just eat...
Were looking into building our new coop this spring and i'm just wondering what everyone's favourite thing about their coops are?
Right now we have a converted shed that we've built roosts onto and put in nesting boxes with a feeder and waterer...
I would like to make it a bit more sensible and...
