So, on sunday we killed two cockerels, then let them hang until today when I butchered them.
First strange thing was that they had green bits around the back end, what is that? (I just cut it off). Another was that one had bad lungs, the other had perfect pink lungs.
We then boiled it but it...
So I have four 12 week birds, and though I see signs, I'm still not entirely sure about gender. Some help wioth breed might be nice, but not necessary. :)
They were the chicks I showed here.
For reference here's who they are now and who they were:
"Penedesenca Barrada" = "Larger black one"...
Just returned a chick to its mother, but mother got defensive. Tried to attack my hand but got chick instead and stripped skin from its neck. Is there anything that can be done? Could it recover?
This was supposed to be a female, but it turned out to be male. They also told us it was a barrada in the shop, but I just want to make sure, lol
I don't know much about the breed, or its variations. What can you tell me about this one?
So we have had five eggs hatch recently out of six, which is amazing because we usually get three or four (one or two don't develop and later some can't hatch). This time they all developed, and only one couldn't hatch.
Anyway, since it's difficult to keep track of who lays what and what...
We got given this hen some while ago. This isn't the latest photo, but she hasn't changed much, except in size, and she's become quite large. Eggs fairly beige.
I live in Catalonia, Spain, which might be a clue, but perhaps not. ;)
Doesn't have to be exact, even approximate guesses welcome. :)
Hello,
I'm a member of an association in Spain, working for the conservation and improvement of habitats and biodiversity. One of our projects is the conservation of the Glorieta Stream for which we could recieve funding from EOCA (European Outdoor Conservation Association). But that depends on...
These are the smallest of our flock, so bantams?
They lay small eggs that tend to be "rocket" shaped, thin and pointy.
This is Spike:
And this is Skylark, with Spike and Tetley in the back ground:
Thank you
Another bird I want help with.
This is one of the few in my flock that seems to be a proper breed and I've always wondered what it might be.
This hen is called Moby Dick:
Thank you
Here's one of my cockerels, called Raven. When we bought him we thought he was a hen, turns out we were wrong! But haven't regretted it. So far he's fathered three of our hens, and two cockerels that we have given to other people.
I don't think he's pure bred, yet he has a very distinctive...
I have three hens that have NEVER gone broody.
My first assumption is that it's something to do with their breeding. And this has been my thinking for a while.
Through selective breeding their broody instinct has been selected out so they could concentrate on laying eggs instead of going...
I have bought a hen recently and she was fine when she came, except for having a bald back from being over-mounted.
Then she started to develop a funny walk, like her hips don't support her properly. Her legs look weak and her body isn't held horizontally. Anyone help with ideas as to what sort...
This morning I turn up at the coop and find one of the 7 week olds look lethargic. He just finds the nearest corner and stands there with his feathers puffed up and doing nothing.
A bit of back story that might help... at around 4 weeks I let them out of their nursery. A week later the hen lost...
I have three 5 week old chicks but one of them is a bit wierd.
It acts lethargic and sometimes, when the other two chicks are up and about, I see this one laying down instead.
It's wings aren't neatly folded on its back but hanging by its side. Not loosely though, and I know it can use its...
I have a chick with wings that aren't folded properly on its back, they sort of hang at the side. And they don't seem to be using or moving them.
Just wondering what sort of things could cause this.
Thanks in advance.
How long do chicks depend on their mother for body warmth? I saw one refence was 10 weeks but I've seen others say shorter. And by the looks of the chicks I have now they don't need their mother to warm them any more, though they still like to hide under her when they perch.
I don't know how serious this is, so far I've not had any problems and not got near inbreeding as far as I know. But I think it will happen at some point.
I have three cockerels, Bamboo, Tetley and Raven. Bamboo is the father of Tetley, though Bamboo is not breeding so much now, he's kept well...
So on 29th of May (just after a failed batch) I placed 6 eggs under our Sobrarbe hen (a Spanish breed). After one getting crushed, one being rejected by the hen and two not developong anything, two of the eggs survived to hatch on 19th May. Both come from our favourite Easter Egger (oldest and...
It's come round to that time again. Over a week ago I started to collect eggs and store them to wait for a broody hen and it wasn't long before I had to wait. A couple of days ago one decided it was time to go broody, by this time I'd collected 9 eggs (a couple of days I'd put aside two not just...
