I have a 10 week old cockerel who was limping, so I brought him inside to a dog crate 4 days ago. He hops around....has good balance when he's standing so I am hoping it won't be a Marek's case? This is the first time anything like this has happened... A tree limb fell outside the coop and...

    Question about dust bathing?

Looked out today and I see a chicken dust bathing in the dirt bottomed run...that's fine but there are a circle of others around her pecking at her--are they preening or did I miss a mite problem? I do check them...not every one but.. Also they are digging that hole bigger for her. Hopefully...

2 Day old chick clicks when she breathes...help?

This chick hatched on Friday afternoon. I can hear her "click" when she breathes....is there anything I can do for her? I have no antibiotics (except for me) and I'm giving electrolyte/vitamins. Anybody have a suggestion? The hatch was my first and only two survived. :(

Construction of our cold weather chicken coop...pictures too!

We live in the Adirondacks, and got our six chicks at TSC. Right away I knew we'd want more (as always! ) and my husband started to build a 6x8 coop, with a 16x10 run. Here's what happened first..we had to get more help to get it all anchored while standing up! Soon, we got to this: the...

    The crowing of a cockerel

Hi all, I was wondering if my cockerel will crow a little less when he grows older? Henry the Cream Legbar is my first rooster. I don't mind the sound at all and sleep through it in the morning, but he doesn't crow once, it's like 15 times and my neighbor is upset. He's a wonderful boy...

Pullet having repeated egg binding...and I think she's dripping...

I've had problems with a few Red Sex Link chickens coming into lay early...at 14.5 weeks. Two became egg bound...one of those has resumed normal egg laying. But one...yesterday I gave her a soaking and calcium and she passed two soft eggs. This is the second time (two eggs!) it's happened with...

    Please confirm my suspicions...??

Peanut is from the Aruacana/Americauna/pullet bin. Are all of these things wrong? I am sure two of three are. :) I think 5 of my 6 might be roosters. They are 9.5 weeks old. .

Soft shelled eggs.. am I doing the right thing?

I'm new to this but have been reading all of your wonderful advice on here for a while. I have three red sexlinik pullets who are in together; they just started laying about 2 weeks ago and are 16.5 weeks old. I separated them for other reasons from the rest of the flock (they were stalking...

    Integration behavior...is this weird?

I have 15 WO (6) and 8 WO (10) chickens...there are at least two roosters among the 10. After the see but no touch time (2 weeks) in the coop, i let the littles loose. A few were bullied mercilessly...by three of the original 6 pullets, and now the three are separated in a different coop...

    Help with teenagers/youngers integration?

I started with 6 Golden Comets who are 14.5 weeks old....they got along. Then I have 10 7.5 week olds...6 EE (with two I THINK are roo) and 4 Cream Legbars (1 rooster). They all get along with each other. So the littles have been living for a few weeks in the coop, in a huge dog crate...

Time for them to go outside! Question about adding 6 week olds to 14 week old pullets?

Our big coop is ready this weekend! And our 10-6 week old EE chicks are ready to go outside. We now have 6 older Golden Comet pullets (14 weeks old) in our little TSC temp coop outside...and plan to house them all together in the big coop. Can I put them all together in the big coop, with a...

EE chick squawks rather than peeps...

I have 6 EE chicks that are almost 6 weeks old...they are happy and about to go out to the bigger grow pen. One...squawks rather than peeps! I think it's a he...he comes up to me and has a conversation--it isn't that he's alarmed or anything. He's definitely not crowing. He seems healthy --is...

Hi all, I've been reading all about your experiences and am so thankful this forum is here! I have 6 chicks in a brooder downstairs... and am adding 4 more on Tuesday. Both groups of chicks were born the same day. I'd like to add the newcomers in with the original 6. My plan is to get a...

    Roof question...

Hi there, we are constructing a coop and run...8x16 footprint. We plan on roofing the whole run, with the coop sharing the roofline to the run if that makes sense. We wanted the plastic wavy panels--how do we make the top of the coop secure from predators? We have: bears, coyote, skunks...

    Adirondack lady is new here...

Hi all, I have just started a new flock in the beautiful NY Adirondacks--anyone else from there? Not too many people up here have chickens...maybe because of the cold weather and the many predators? I have a summer (Tractor Supply) coop and will be building a brand new one...with a nice...
