    Non-egg laying hen

Anyone ever have a hen that never laid an egg? I have 6 hens all different breeds that are 1 yr old. 99% sure it's my Speckled Sussex.

    What's the deal?

Hi all! I live in N. GA and have 5 hens 31 weeks old this week. A Barred Rock, Easter Egger, Welsummer, Speckled Sussex and a Gold Laced Wyandotte. 1st egg - Barred Rock at 21 weeks 2nd egg - Welsummer at 24 weeks 3rd egg - Easter Egger at 26 weeks Here's the problem. The Welsummer stopped...

    De-icer thoughts...

Hey all, I recently purchased a de-icer for my chickens water bucket for the upcoming winter. I was reading the instructions (imagine that!) and it states to not use extension cords which I thought was a little strange but I understand the risk. It does say thought that you can use with a...

    Another 1st egg post

Finally! After 21 weeks my Barred Rock finally gave us an egg. Seems a bit on the small side so hopefully they'll get bigger. Now I'm waiting for the Welsummer, Speckled Sussex, Golden Laced Wyandotte & the EE to give up some treats.

    Laying time

As this is my first go 'round with chickens I was wondering if there is typically a normal egg laying time. Normally first thing in the morning, mid morning, noon, mid day or late day. I'm gonna expect the answers are all over the place but was wondering if any time is more frequent than others.

    Tiny little bugs

Hey all, Does anyone know or seen these super tiny bugs in the picture? I have their food available in a 5 gallon bucket with two 3" 90's sticking out. This morning I opened the lid and saw what looked like sawdust on the top lip of the bucket and then noticed that it was moving. A closer...

    No combs

Hi all, I have 5 hens that are roughly 12 wks old this week. I’ve been loosely planning on eggs in the next 6-8 weeks. One of the things I’ve read here about timing is that the combs will be bright/dark red but none of my birds really even have a comb yet. The breeds are 1 each of Barred Rock...

    When to give oyster shell?

Hi all, my small flock (5) is currently 8 wks old and was thinking forward to egg time so that got me thinking. I've read here that when they're laying eggs that they need calcium for the shell strength. I'm currently using up the original bag of unmedicated chick starter and have chick grit...

    Chest/breast banging

Hey all, Another newbie question from me. My 5 chicks are almost 3 wks old and in a fairly large brooder in the garage and for my first time it has been fun and relatively easy process so far. This morning I went down to check on them and say Hi and while I'm just hanging there watching them 3...

    Grit or No grit...

So I've got 5 day old chicks and they're in the brooder eating chick starter. It was so nice out today with temps around 75 so I thought I'd treat the ladies to some yard time. Sat out there with them for about 15 minutes and started thinking about whether or not they would be able to handle...

    1st timer...New chicks with one a bully

Hi all, we picked up our new chicks last night. One pullet each of Barred Rock, Speckled Sussex, Gold Laced Wyandotte and a Welsummer. My fifth will be an EE but she is delayed until next Friday. The Barred Rock is the biggest of the 4 day olds and is a real meanie. Frequently pecking at the...

Solved Finding posts I've replied to

How can I do a search to list the posts I've replied to? Not my own posts but others. I replied several times on a particular post that I liked but failed to "save" or "watch" the post and now I can't find the product I was interested in. Please help! Thank you!! Skip

Cleaning your PVC pipe watering system

Trying to choose between a PVC pipe watering system with horizontal nipples or the 5 gallon bucket system with horizontal nipples. A conversation with someone I met recently said they used the pipe system first but it ended up getting gunked up inside the pipe and nipples that they switched over...

    2 watering questions

I get my chicks this Thursday so I'm still quite awhile from drinking water in the coop/run but I'm always thinking about the next step because this is my first go 'round with chickens. I have horizontal nipples that I was originally going to use with a PVC pipe system. I was talking to another...

    New chicks coming...1st timer

Hi all, Been loving the site. So much information! I have designed and am currently about 90% done with the construction of the coop/pen and also built a brooder so for the most part I'm pretty ready to go. I will be picking up my chicks next week. My questions are for the brooder time of their...

    Built my 1st brooder

Hey all, I've been actively working on my new & 1st coop so while that is not being worked on I've also been planning a brooder. I originally had a couple different sizes of cardboard boxes that I was going to use with a heat lamp. I don't have my birds yet but I've been trying dry runs of the...

    Heat lamp/Brooder question

Last night I was experimenting with the heat lamp I'm going to use for chicks at the end of March. I'll be using a clamp on lamp with 250w red bulb. New purchase from Tractor Supply. At the moment my plan is to use a cardboard box. One box is about 36Lx24Wx24D and the other is about 30Lx20Wx18D...

    Speckled Sussex pullets in GA?

Hey all, starting to really plan for the birds of my first flock. I've got all the breeds in my checkout basket at My Pet Chicken that will ship on 4/9. A tad later than I was hoping for but it is what it is. I'm looking for someone in GA that will have Speckled Sussex pullets available on or...

    Anchoring a coop

I'm in the process of designing & building my own coop/run. The henhouse will be 4' x 6' and the run will be 9' long x 6' with extra ground underneath the house area. It will look generally like the photo included but that is just a random generic photo. My question is: Does anyone actually...
